to never have biscuits, crisps or other snack type things in the house?

having read on another thread about people providing biscuits and tea for a babysitter, I am rather puzzled, as if i were to do that, i would have to ensure that i went out and especially bought such food. Am I the only person who never keeps this sort of thing in the house as a matter of course? the only snack type stuff i have is fruit, and nuts, of many descriptions. and cheese. we dont eat particularly healthily, but ive never seen any reason to include these things in the usual grocery shop.

Sorry I can't resist....have a biscuit Biscuit

vigglewiggle · 14/01/2012 22:10

I don't "keep" them, I buy them, and then we eat them!

emsyj · 14/01/2012 22:10

I never buy crisps, as I cannot leave them once they're in the house and I have been known to eat an entire 10 bag multipack in one go Blush. But it is fairly usual to have something snacky in the house non? I would not curl my lip at an offer of nuts (preferably honey roast cashews or dry roasted peanuts). Those are very acceptable snack offerings.

JustHecate · 14/01/2012 22:10

I don't, either.

There's just no need. If you have a cupboard full of crap then you'll eat it. And you don't need to.

I daren't keep it in the house! Grin

If we decide to have something snacky, we have to go out and buy it.

Tooblunt2012 · 14/01/2012 22:10

I thought the same thing - when people are

coming round I do specifically go & buy those kind of things.
I can't be trusted not to scoff on the snacks if they're in the cupboard so simply

don't have them in the house!Grin

AgentZigzag · 14/01/2012 22:11

YABU and downright weird, if you don't mind me saying?

Fruit and nuts should only be eaten encased in chocolate, everyone knows that.

feelingbullied · 14/01/2012 22:11

its an honest question deadsouls. I just dont understand the obsession with them. If I am having a friend over for coffee, i will make the effort and go buy a cake, but its usually much simpler and easier and frankly cheaper, to make a meal.

Yeah, Well done.

shouldabeenwashedinajug · 14/01/2012 22:12

I don't have them in the house as a matter of course.

When we moved house I chocolate hobnobs for the removal men.

If I had a babysitter (I don't) then I'd probably do the same and wouldn't see that as a problem.

But then, I'm not puzzled by the idea of going out and buying food that I don't routinely eat.

The world must be a very confusing place for you op Grin

pointythings · 14/01/2012 22:12

I need chocolate in the house. If I have chocolate in the house, I will not crave it, nor will I eat it. It sits in the back of the cupboard where my coffee lives and smiles at me reassuringly. Until DH eats it, which is why I now have a bar of 85% cocoa solids which he does not like.

If I do not have chocolate in the house, I must go out and buy some.

I am weird, and probably U.

AgentZigzag · 14/01/2012 22:13

deadsouls was only messing feelingbullied, y'know, biscuits being a snacky food...?

feelingbullied · 14/01/2012 22:14

thank goodness. i was getting worried there. :)

agent zigzag, i didnt say there was no chocolate encasing of nuts. some of them are beautifully encased. :) but mumsnetters have pointed out the exact reason why i dont have them in the hosue, as we will waste ourselves eating that crap instead of proper food. kids can eat crap when they are out and about instead

OP posts:
WhiteTrash · 14/01/2012 22:14

Neither do we. I dont have any kind of juice either so if you dont want tea or coffee, its water.

If I have friends round I'll get some bits and bobs in but they only last the night.

CointreauVersial · 14/01/2012 22:14

My mum never eats biscuits, so she stocks up on mini packs of biscuits from hotel rooms etc. and whips those out when people come round.

You have to check the sell-by dates, though. Grin

OP, don't you ever have friends round for a cuppa? Surely you could run to a packet of rich tea for such an occasion?

Shutupanddrive · 14/01/2012 22:14

Yabu

iwouldgoouttonight · 14/01/2012 22:16

It is not humanly possible to have snack foods in the house without eating them all immediately. I even managed to eat two boxes of chocolates we'd bought (and wrapped) for friends for Christmas and then had to go out and re-buy them and try and hide them from myself.

I have the willpower of a, erm, something with no will power.

WorraLiberty · 14/01/2012 22:17

There's always biscuits in this house and once a week or so I'll buy a multipack of crisps.

I don't bother with them and nor does my DH but the kids love them Smile

EmmaBemma · 14/01/2012 22:18

well, I don't often have them in the house either (though, post-Christmas - is a different story; there's a chocolate orange, and sundry assorted chocolatey-sweety crap the children were given by relatives ). But if I have friends coming round, or if we get a babysitter, I either buy some biscuits, or bake something to serve with tea/coffee if I can be bothered. Food is a social thing as well as just fuel, no?

MrsPlesWearsAFez · 14/01/2012 22:19

The only reason that I have biscuits in my house at present is that j bought a selection to offer a babysitter!

I don't buy biscuits/crisps etc as a matter of course. We don't spend a lot of time at home so aren't really here to snack (if that makes any sense?)

feelingbullied · 14/01/2012 22:20

cointreau, they get tea/coffee etc with nuts, popcorn, and if they there for a bit longer, lunch/dinner etc. anything from pasta with sauce to proper meal cooked from scratch, depending on what i have in, and whats been happening during the day (ie been rushing aorund or not)

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 14/01/2012 22:22

I've never got biscuits or sweets in the house, except Christmas and birthdays. It's not real food and I would eat it all! Which is why my DS3 gets a bad reputation at the park for begging...

LydiaWickham · 14/01/2012 22:22

YABU if you are saying you wouldn't make sure you got some when you had a babysitter over, surely everyone knows you provide some sort of snack food for babysitters? We normally have biscuits and chocolate in the house, but if we had someone coming over to sit, i'll think the day or so before to make sure I've got some 'nice/posh' biscuits in for them (and make sure it's clear they are reserved for the babysitter, not for general consumption).

I don't understand why people don't have treats in the house because they'll just sit there and eat the lot - don't people have self restraint?

LydiaWickham · 14/01/2012 22:23

oh, x post - popcorn would count in the same category as crisps or biscuits (depending if sweet or salt).

GoingForGoalWeight · 14/01/2012 22:24

My DS loves crisps and chocolate. I buy some in for his snacks only. He is very slim Envy and refuses to eat refridgerated food or food that has been such as cheese, yoghurt etc

WorraLiberty · 14/01/2012 22:24

but mumsnetters have pointed out the exact reason why i dont have them in the hosue, as we will waste ourselves eating that crap instead of proper food. kids can eat crap when they are out and about instead

I see why you're puzzled now.

I bring my kids up the same way as myself and my DH were brought up...and that's to ask if they can have biscuits or crisps etc.

If we say no, because dinner isn't too far off or because they've already had a snack, they accept that and have fruit instead.

It was never an issue for me growing up and it's not an issue for my kids, but I do know some people for whom it's very difficult to resist these things if they have them in the house.
