to ask for technical computer-to-disc help?

I was given a lovely digital camera for Christmas. I took some photos and managed to save them into my computer. I would like to have prints and know that I have to save them from the computer onto a disc and take it into a shop.

I thought I had saved some onto a disc and took them to Sainsbury's today where the man was helpful. I could not print any because I had saved them (if I had) onto a DVD instead of a CD. I am now trying to save them from the computer onto a CD but just don't know what buttons to click and don't really understand the dialogue boxes that appear. Idiotic guide anyone? AIBU to expect proper instructions to come with a digital camera to enable me to obtain prints?

Could you just take the photos on the camera memory card in?

Tee2072 · 14/01/2012 15:07

Well, yes because it's not a printer, it's a camera.

I'm surprised the shop couldn't read a DVD.

Anyway, assuming you have a CD player that can burn, or write to, CDs, it should just be a matter of dragging and dropping the pictures to the CD within Windows explorer.

How did you get them onto the DVD?

CultOfSkaro · 14/01/2012 15:07

You could use an online site instead - there's loads that give you 50 free prints with your first order, so all you pay is postage, and in my experience, they come within a couple of days. I've used Snapfish before who were very good, the website is very easy to follow and all you need to do is upload your photos, choose the size print you want and place the order.

tribpot · 14/01/2012 15:08

Or you could upload the photos to an online printing service to save having to go back to the shop? But Jugs is right, most printing places like Boots will be able to access the photos off the memory card inside the camera (not whilst it is in the camera I should add!)

FabbyChic · 14/01/2012 15:18

You need to put your pictures on an SD card, saving them to a CD is archaic.

Vicky2011 · 14/01/2012 15:31

I use photobox, just create an album for your photos on the site, upload them and the photos will be with you in a few days.

T2072 I was trying to use the Sainsbury's machines and getting nowhere so put my hand up for help from the man. He couldn't do it either so I must have got something wrong using the disc.

I get things onto discs by exploring and fumbling, reaching a goal by accident. When I try to see what's on what I think is an empty disc, there are things there already so I'm probably looking at the wrong thing.

I have no CD player; I use the computer for anything like that. I can play videos on my television .

I'll try the dragging and dropping

FabbyChic What's a SD card?

CultofSkaro On line might be easier if every step holds your hand. But I haven't taken even 40 photos yet. Would I get them all free? . I'll try that one though.

JugsMcGee and TribPot I hadn't thought of just taking in the memory card.

Vicky2011 Do you mean that you get your photos in a book? I have huge, matching photo albums and want to stick them in my current one.

With all this, I might just go back to my SLR take photos and send the film off!

Thank you all for your help. I'm determined to reach what I'm aiming for with these new fangled thingummies. 2 February will be another battle when I have to retune my television.

Yabu to ask for it here.

You can probably just bring the camera in to the shop and get them to help you there.

RuleBritannia · 14/01/2012 17:46

TheParanoidAndroid Well, that would be taking in the memory card, wouldn't it? Well, if I get nowhere on linbe, I'll try taking in the camera complete with the memory card still inside it. (As long as they do not add charges bcause they think I'm a dumbo).

forget the cd. copy the ones you want to print from your computer onto a usb memory stick then take that into the shop.

brass · 14/01/2012 18:07

OP the printing machines have different slots for different camera cards so they won't think you are thick. Why should they?

I've always done it straight from the SD card myself.

TheParanoidAndroid · 14/01/2012 18:08

Well yes, but since you don't know whether you have an sd card or an xd or a micro sd...these are all types of memory card, you are probably better off bringing the whole thing in to someone who can help you.

Or reading the instructions.

brass · 14/01/2012 18:27

doesn't matter what the card is! Most places will be able to do it straight from the card!

Nanny0gg · 14/01/2012 18:38

Do you have a CD/DVD rewriter in your computer?
If you don't you can't burn (copy) anything onto a CD so you will have to take the card (or the camera+card) into a shop and ask for help.
Or do it online.

TheParanoidAndroid · 14/01/2012 21:35

I know it doesnt matter what the card is, but from the sound if it op doesnt know one end of the camera from another, so suggesting she gets some help with it usnt that odd.

RuleBritannia · 15/01/2012 09:27

TheParanoidAndroid Yes, I've had different cameras since 195..... and they have been easy to learn. A digital needs knowledge of other things besides just pressing buttons and a viewfinder.

NannyOgg Having a CD/DVD rewriter in the computer is something to look into but I think I have because I copied a short video onto a DVD and it worked for the recipient. As I said in a previous post, I did it probably through exploring, experimenting, forgetting each step I took but fumbling to the target.

CultofSkaro I left any more brainwork on my digital photos until this morning and have successfully(?) placed an order with Snapfish. Sainsbury's charges 19p per print for up to 200 or so and Snapfish charges 9p. I found a coupon code on the site and used that and got will get all my 26 for £1.62. Not a bad price.

I need a bit more practice though because they will acept only jpeg photos and I have lots on Word pages so I will have to convert them. I have an idiot's guide to doing that from AdTrader so that I could put photos next to my advertisements.

Thank you all. I know where to come if I have future hopelessness computer problems. Unbelievable, isn't it? I began to use computers at work in 1990. Can do all sorts of office work but it's the 'non-office work' that gets me so I don't usually bother with it eg Twitter. I can just about manage Facebook but I'm not really interested in letting everyone know when I'm having breakfast etc.
