To not want to go on holiday this morning?

Poorlybabygirl · 12/01/2012 04:50

DD (5 months old) is sick with a urinary tract infection. I spent the night in hospital with her on Tuesday night as her temp was above 39. In the last few hours it has varied between 39.4 (10pm) and 34.9 (now - after ibuprofen). She is on antibiotics now but has only had two doses so far.

Thing is, we are supposed to be going on a long haul holiday this morning, with an 8 hour flight. Our GP said yesterday afternoon that he did not think she should travel. However, DH does not want to miss what he says is a holiday of a lifetime and thinks we should take her anyway. I don't want to take the risk of her deteriorating in flight or at our destination (Caribbean island).

This has caused a huge row, he says I am paranoid and overreacting. AIBU not to go?

Hmm, tricky one...

is there anyway you could leave on a flight in a couple of days, when she most likely will have improved?

you are NOT paranoid and overreacting, btw. It is only natural to be worried.

OTOH, she is on a course of antibiotics which usually work quite quickly with UTIs, and there will surely be a hospital/clinic at your destination.

and sorry to mention it, but why on earth plan a holiday of lifetime with a 5 month old??

anyway...still not sure...

Fresh01 · 12/01/2012 05:05

No, I wouldn't want to go either and we have done long haul travel with babies and thought nothing of flying short haul with babies for holidays from 10 weeks of age. Can you use your travel insurance to change the dates?

Traveling on a plane with a baby can be hard enough when it is well let alone sick and upset. Also getting additional healthcare on a carribean island with possible language barriers if required could be hard.

Animation · 12/01/2012 05:20

I'd have thought she'd be OK - if you've got plenty of antibiotics and it's only a UTI she's got. I'm surprised the doctor advised that she shouldn't travel.

Does sound like hard work to me though - going all that way.

EttiKetti · 12/01/2012 05:24

I'd go, you have antibiotics, take plenty of pain relief.

sashh · 12/01/2012 05:38

YANBU to put your child's health above a holiday.

Surely your insurance will pay out if your Dr has told you not to fly with DC. You will be flying over water so if baby is unwell the flight cannot divert (even if they let you on) to anywhere with a hospital.

It is not uncommon for a baby with a high temp to have a fit - it is normally nothing but does you DP want that to happen half way accross the atlantic?

Contact insurance and ask if you can go in a few days.

PrancingPony · 12/01/2012 05:41

I understand your reluctance but to be honest if you have antibiotics I would go. I am veeeeery prone to UTI's but in my experience antibiotics kick in very quickly so after two doses she should be picking up fairly soon.

Have an amazing time if you decide to go! Envy

EauDeLaPoisson · 12/01/2012 05:52

Deteriorate?
Is she your first by any chance?

flamegirl77 · 12/01/2012 06:08

Eau what do you mean by that? Surely it's not impossible that an unwell baby's health might deteriorate on a long haul flight with recycled air and changing air pressure? Confused Does everything a first time mother does have to be labelled PFB? It's hard enough as it is.

OP I'm sure baby will be fine but if you can reschedule with your travel insurance that's what I would be doing.

Sirzy · 12/01/2012 06:36

I would reschedule it.

Surely IF there was a problem while you where away it wouldn't be covered on any travel insurance as it will be on record that you have been reccomended not to go?

Chundle · 12/01/2012 07:57

I've gone before on long haul when dd was a toddler and had a throat infection, I gave her calpol and nurofen to keep temp down and antibiotics worked after a day and half of doses.

CailinDana · 12/01/2012 08:04

The thing with a baby is, yes, she might have a UTI but she might also have a kidney infection and you just don't know because she can't tell you. A kidney infection in a small child can be very serious. If I were you I would wait until she's definitely on the mend and then go.

Bloodymary · 12/01/2012 09:40

Oh how difficuilt for you.
I would try to go in a couple of days time if at all possible.
Good luck!

4ForksSake · 12/01/2012 10:13

Tough one. Think I'd be reluctant to want to get on a flight with poorly baby (for the points already made) so I'd definitely try to contact insurers & airline & see if you can go in a couple days (providing you're going for long enough for that to be viable!). Where are you going? Are there plenty flights that you could catch another day? If you're going to Barbados, I can vouch 1st hand that their medical care is fantastic so if that's where you're going & she gets poorly again while you're there, you'll be ok for medical care.

Good luck.

CamperFan · 12/01/2012 10:40

Having just been on holiday and DH and regretting going while I was not 100% (was also on antibiotics), and that just being me, not one of the DCs, I would say don't go, esp if your GP recommended she shouldnt travel. The first 6 days of our holiday were pretty rubbish tbh, and I know from experience that it's even worse when it's your DC that's ill. I would have thought your insurance company would be OK with it if you get a drs letter or whatever they need. Ignore any pfb comments, just annoying. Good luck.

CamperFan · 12/01/2012 10:40

"DH and I" regretted goiong

CamperFan · 12/01/2012 10:40

I give up

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 12/01/2012 10:46

YANBU - I dont think I would want to go all that way with a poorly baby either - surely if the doc recommends you dont go you can get the money back from insurance and go at a later date.

To be honest the Caribbean is not the place to go with a poorly baby, it may just make things worse.

JamNan · 12/01/2012 11:34

YANBU
If you travel against medical advice and your baby deteriorates your medical insurance will be invalid. As someone before said Barbados has a good healthcare system but I believe they no longer have a reciprocal arrangement with the UK so you will have to pay and it's very expensive. I think taking a baby with a UTI on a long haul flight to a hot country is very unwise. A doctor friend tells me that babies are unable to adjust to the in-cabin air pressure as easily as adults and flying hurts their ears and is uncomfortable for them. The flight and the high temperatures at your destination could dehydrate her, and make her condition worse.

I have travelled in the Caribbean and you should be aware that in some places there won't even be a clinic let alone a doctor on island and you may not be able to get to a hospital at night because some airpstrips cannot accommodate night landings and takeoffs. I suggest you phone your travel agent and your insurance company and ask for advice. This is what you have insurance for.

I can imagine your DH's disappointment but it's just not worth the risk. And I hope you are able to travel later when she's better. Good luck.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 12/01/2012 11:34

the doc says no.... that's good enough for me, though I would see if he could have another look at her before deciding for sure.
