well, I guess it helps clean the wound and stem any blood flow, and cold water may well reduce swelling/pain?

PattiMayor · 11/01/2012 20:29

It's better than a kiss though which is usually what I dole out to the DC

AtYourCervix · 11/01/2012 20:30

bollocks.

and the green paper towels were completely non-absorbent and smelled funny.

It's a visual thing with kids.... Looks effective and hides the blood/injury from them seeing!

CoffeeCamel · 11/01/2012 20:33

It's good for cooling down the area, and for letting them see that Something Is Being Done - which is often all they need to get them happy and playing again.

timetosmile · 11/01/2012 20:34

it's great!
It's green and damp, and something to hold dramatically over the wound - a visible token of injury to be 'ooohed' and 'aaahed' over by the other 6year olds in the playground.
Sudocreme is a close second.
Crepe bandage better than a transparent little plaster.
Enjoy those playground scrapes Smile

chibi · 11/01/2012 20:34

well duh

it's the blue paper towels which are most effective

as any fule kno

Meglet · 11/01/2012 20:34

It might be crap but my kids are fooled.

SoupDragon · 11/01/2012 20:35

Of course it works. Although they have blue towels at our primary and we use kitchen roll at home.

Ha ha - it's all the rage at my kids' school too.

You would not believe the power wet paper towels have in my class! Maybe it because ours are blue.

snowball3 · 11/01/2012 20:37

Blue paper towels and water are known to cure absolutely everything in a school.

An ice pack comes a close second Grin

FutureNannyOgg · 11/01/2012 20:37

When I was a student, I was competing in a martial arts competition, big national thing, so we had a serious St John's presence, first aid tent, ambulance on standby outside etc.
Everyone was coming out with hand and foot injuries (normal, and SJ had been briefed) and they ran out of ice packs, so when I went in with a broken foot I got.... A green paper towel soaked in tepid water.
It didn't help.

TrinityRhino · 11/01/2012 20:39

they are blue, they have always been blue

MaureenMLove · 11/01/2012 20:40

We have white at our school!

I used a few today on a child, who had fallen over and ripped a hole in his trousers, as he skidded across the tarmac. He was very proud to walk away, holding his white paper towel and limping slightly.

He was 15, btw, so it still works at secondary school! Grin

AtYourCervix · 11/01/2012 20:42

so just the Cervix girls who are unconvinced by the power of the wet paper towel then.

OP posts:
Panzee · 11/01/2012 20:43

We're fancy in our school.
We use ice packs for everything.

It should be a wet sponge like they use on footballers.

I used to think that sponge was magic.

They fall over holding their knee/ankle/other bit. Along comes a man with a bucket and a sponge. Next minute they are up and running about like it never happened!!

timetosmile · 11/01/2012 20:46

AYC, you're not expecting any clinical improvement in the injury from the application are you? It's holistic..treat the child.

AtYourCervix · 11/01/2012 20:48

conversation came up because i was reading this and discussing it.

warm compresses is the way forward.

Hulababy · 11/01/2012 20:48

Oh, but at school it works a treat for some many complaints with little ones. Bumped head, scratched arm, grazed knee, etc - bit of a dab with a wet paper towel and they are right as rain!

And then the attention that they get when they return from first aid, from all their little friends. They love it.

Have been so surprised tbh at how far a wet paper towel will go in school.

If they ever get to the stage of needing a real ice pack or an actual plaster - gosh, they thing they are in heaven! Grin

Hulababy · 11/01/2012 20:49

Paper towels are blue here too - maybe it is the green ones cervix. Tell school to change to blue, they work wonders! Wink
