I realise this may encourage lots of people to attack my choice of being vegetarian, but I am posting here to get the most replies quickly as I'm not sure how to handle this. My daughter attends nursery, and yesterday when they gave me her daily sheet it said that she had been fed chicken for lunch. As we are both vegetarian I challenged that and they said no, they just copied that, and she had eaten lentil stew. Today she has had very loose/smelly/profuse poos and when I just changed her I noticed several pieces of what looked like (I think) chicken. It was whitish and fibrous. I was about to phone nursery to confront this as I have made it very clear I don't want her fed meat but thought I should check mumsnet's wisdom on the matter. Would chicken look like this in a nappy? What to do?

Well I would calm down to start with. I am a veggie as well and can see how important it is to you. Like others have said a number of things could have happened. It could be your child's stomach is a bit off, the food is different than what she is used to. They could have gave her a chicken meal. If they did give her chicken I honestly think it would have been a mistake rather than malicious. Not great but you don't know anything for sure.

I would have a quiet reminder with them and don't go in guns blazing tbh.

OP, I was going to come and post something very similar to upahill.

Just remind them. No guns. If you're right, it won't change what's happened, if you're wrong, you'll look silly.

Ok, the only thing I would take issue with in your post is that they could have 'harmed' her by feeding her chicken - you are going to have to get over that before your kid starts eating ants Hmm Grin

I would be more concerned that they have fairly obviously in my opinion, lied to you. It seems clear to me that her stools are different. I would go in and say that you want to reiterate that as far as possible (as you know she could grab food from others) you want her to be fed a vegetarian diet and that you noticed she had different stools than normal.

Your only other option is to do packed lunch or pull her out if you are concerned about other things.

I, too, have never seen identifiable chicken in a nappy. My DD did do an alarmingly bright green-flecked poo once, whch mystified me until I found the chewed off corner of a cardboard box of rice, which she'd snacked on without my knowledge! Do you think she may have eaten some paper, or something?

LovesBeingWearingSkinnyJeans · 11/01/2012 17:57

I would be angry and have had a similar thing at nursery die to something dd shouldn't be given to eat.

Speak to tge nusery manager.

At 15 months she is likely to be trying the taste of anything she comes across and if there are other children around who are not vegetarian I think you have to accept that until she is old enough to understand you will not let her eat meat, that she might just eat it if another child has it.

yousankmybattleship · 11/01/2012 18:03

If you feel it is important for your daughter to be a vegetarian then the nursery should respect that and so I can understand you questioning them. I do think though that if you tell them you've got all CSI with her nappy they may think you've gone a tiny bit mental. Let it go. They've already given you an explanation. End of story.
