Chicken pox and school run?

A parent always drops her DS1 at school and takes Her DS2 in a pushchair. Today she said that DS2 has chickenpox whilst as usual he was sitting in the buggy without raimcover.

I am not sure what she could do differently but AIBU to be surprised that she is doing this, given the potential dangers of chickenpox?

Well this thread could be written about me. Just returned from the school run with my LO who is covered in spots (and he is strapped into a buggy). However he caught CP from his brother who got it from school. So if you are waiting at the school gates for you son/daughter then they have already been exposed to the virus in school so a 'extra' LO in his/her buggy isn't going to be a major risk. Also if there is someone at your school gates who has a comprised immune system then their LO has already been exposed to CP aswell.

Hope that all makes sense. (I dont post often more of a lurker)

I was led to be believe that as an air born virus you would need to be in close proximity and breathe the same air for 15 mins to be at risk of catching cp. So very unlikely to be at risk outside.Every day child with cp becomes less contagious.

Exactly the same here 1sockmonkey. DS2 caught it at school, brought it home, DS3 caught it... it's still going around school.. I was told today that at one point there was 14 children missing from one classroom with it. Shock

saladfingers yes, that's correct.

When dd3 got chicken pox it was her first half term at reception. When I phoned in to say she had chicken pox the school secretary started laughing hysterically she was child no 46 ringing in sick that day (from a school of 101 students)

I took her on school run I had 3 other children in that school so was not able to get someone to do so. I took the point of view so many others had it that it was well known chicken pox were rife

I just googled to see what people would do about school runs if their other dc had chickenpox (as my 1 year old is developing some kind of rash at the moment and I’m just praying it’s not chickenpox) and found myself here. I don’t see any other option, that you should still bring the other child to the school eventually if that happens I think.

But I’m here to blame NHS decision not to include chickenpox vaccine into routine practises. This is a known illness that we have a cure for, still we have to wait and see how it disturbs our children because someone claims this is a mild illness and they don’t need to spend money on the vaccines for good old chickenpox. Mums should enjoy their time off from work (at least 10days I guess?) when it happens and that’s all. :(
