Is mil being unreasonable here or am I?

My birthday at the weekend. Mil insisted on taking me to shops to buy a gift. Nothing I really need or can't get myself so I picked something that I fancied i.e. a pair of shoes in a well-known shop.
Presented shoes to mil (well within her price range btw) thinking that she'd say 'OK, let's go to counter and pay'. Instead she announced loudly 'God, they're horrible. I'm not getting them!'
I just left the shop mortified to be honest. My dh told her her behaviour was not on-she responded with: 'Oh have I upset her then?'.
I'm afraid I was very cold with her rest of the day. I can't help it. I still feel cold towards her. I don't know if IABU or not, but it is bugging me.
This is NOT about the shoes, btw, just really peed off at her behaviour.

Agree with Kayano

Sometimes I am rude, its not intended so maybe it was 'mock horror' in so far as she didn't like them but also didn't intend to hurt your feelings.

You could have been a little less horrified/offended, put a lighthearted spin on things etc., it very much depends on what actually happened... did she intend to make you feel shit?

My taste is certainly not everyone's (actually I don't know anyone with my taste) I don't think its bad but I also accept that most people would boak at some of my much loved items. Meh.

Well, some of you have a fantastic dubious taste in footwear! Seriously though. The MiL was unreasonable to criticise what OP had chosen. It would make me feel stupid, especially if the remark had been made in front of other people.

If I had been buying them for my DiL, I would have asked, "Are you sure? Right, let's go to the checkout." I wouldn't even have said that the shoes were not my cup of tea.
