To think the Dr's surgery LIED (about Mirena coil fitting)

I had the mirena coil fitted yesterday. I was told it would be 'a little uncomfortable'.

It f**king hurt, really REALLY hurt. The only positive I can come up with is that it was quite quick, but I found it really hard to handle the pain and am now dreading having the bloody thing out when it comes to ttc.

Bit of a stupid AIBU but shouldn't the Dr's be a bit more honest and let you know you should be prepared for pain? I fainted afterwards as my blood pressure nose dived and had to lie on a stretcher until I was more stable. Apparently that's quite common too.

Other experiences? Am I just a wimp?

I found it more unpleasant than a smear, but not quite as bad as the internal examinations I had when going into labour. I was warned I'd feel lightheaded afterwards, which I did a bit, and was made to sit in the waiting room with a disgusting cup of tea for half an hour afterwards.

iggly - because they can control it/ it is less likely to go wrong through user error (therefore pushing it particularly in teenage mums). you can't forget to take your pill, it can't split etc. actually the reason a lot of woman (like me) liked it too.

LunarRose · 10/01/2012 13:53

(until it got pulled out during sex Hmm )

ItsTimeToBurnThisDiscoDown · 10/01/2012 14:14

Lunar, I have a horrible mental image of the coil being embedded in your poor DP's penis, say it ain't so?!Confused

Mine was painless, just kept feeling like I was going to fart! I had prepared for it being a lot worse and I was lucky. They gave me local anesthetic though, did you have that?

BuntyPenfold · 10/01/2012 14:41

I had no anaesthetic, and it was only painful for a minute or two.
However, that was the Family Planning clinic. I previously had a very painful failure by a GP at the surgery, after which the practice nurse told me to go to the FP clinic.
Ask around if you can, for local recommendations.

It'stime: Unfortunately you are not far off correct. I must have been enjoying myself cos I didn't feel a thing until after he'd finished Grin (then blood pain and emergency room)

I have the best sex injury story.

HipHopOpotomus · 10/01/2012 15:11

I didn't feel a thing and she was incredibly quick - matter of seconds.
Sorry it's been painful for you. I've had mine about 6 months and am loving it thus far.

Iggly · 10/01/2012 15:52

Lunar, I may have one that measures up to yours, but don't want to hijack thread

Rikalaily · 10/01/2012 16:26

Mine hurt like hell going in... found out 11 months later during a laparoscopy that it hurt so much because she'd shoved it right through the top of my uterus while fitting it! Was in agony and bleeding the whole 11 months because they refused to remove it, good job they did really or I could have been damaged more.

LunarRose · 10/01/2012 16:40

Grin @ fluffyanimal yes I think I have already hijacked the thread. Perhaps we should start a new one!!

OMG at Rikelaily Shock

I get really cross about the lack of care we get regarding women's contraception. Yes fitting a coil it might not hurt but as we've seen for a lot it can be agony, that we don't warn people adequately is just breathtaking (I at least was told to get someone to take you home and take paracetamol beforehand). Am agog at the lady that had to cycle home!!!

From what I've read (and someone might correct me on this) in the US that recommend total bedrest after fitting, partly to make sure it doesn't move and they give you semi regular check ups to make sure it didn't move.

Having had two go wrong, I decided that coils just don't agree with me...

Rikalaily · 10/01/2012 16:44

I was offered a refit using ultrasound guidance, told them to piss off!

NCIS · 10/01/2012 18:52

I fainted when mine was put in and that was with a local too. It felt like needles being stuck into the insides of my pelvis. After 3 births with only gas and air I thought I had a high pain threshold but obviously not.
On the plus side, it didn't hurt at all coming out but I did bleed constantly for the six months I had it in for.

handbagsatdawn · 10/01/2012 19:18

Is the Mirena coil the progestogen only one? Went to GPs only this morning to get more contraceptive pills and was told I was too old (41) to be given my usual pill now and have been given Cerazette instead. But at the same time was convinced that a coil is the way ahead so am booked in to have one in 5 weeks time. GP told me that having had DCs I should only find the process "slightly uncomfortable". Am now scared. But in some ways looking forward to having a well justified day off on insertion day. What shall I tell my (male) boss?

foreverondiet · 10/01/2012 19:50

I have one and just slight discomfort, DS2 was already 6 months old when it was put in.

I'm on my third and have never felt more than discomfort with any of them, and I think that mostly comes from being tense about having someone rummage down there. Have never needed anyone to take me home and I went straight to a body conditioning class after my last one.

However, my strings disappeared on the 2nd one I had and that took a fair bit of painful rummaging to get it out - the strings had curled up and were clinging to the inside of my womb, I could feel the GP scraping bits of tissue off when she was trying to get a grip on the strings (yes, tmi).

my mum and i have both had coils all our adult lives (not mirena - not sure if that's different) and we both think it hurts like fuck and we feel/felt ill after it is/was fitted for a few days.

After my last one was fitted by a student - lots of fumbling around and a ring was inserted in my cervix to keep it open while they positioned it, then he left the room while the ring was in there to get another doctor to help. By the time they returned i was crying with pain. The doc sorted it out and gave the student a dressing down while i rolled off the bed and threw up on the floor - the surgery paid for my taxi home. Traumatic :(

ArtVandelay · 10/01/2012 20:30

Mrshannigan please monitor the pain. My coil broke through my womb and stuck in my intestines and I had to have a surgery so they could find it and dig it back out. If it hurts continually raise holy hell at the Drs and don't get fobbed off. If I ever see my Drs receptionist (who would not give me a follow up appointment) on fire - I will not be weeing on her, put it that way. I think Drs are a bit blase about coils in general - its funny how many people have had severe problems if not a real near miss like myself.

ArtVandelay · 10/01/2012 20:33

Oh and YANBU - things would no doubt be different if it was men who had to get a metal thingy jammed up their willies. Would be an in-patient procedure and everything Wink
