I know my son is autistic but does he really have to start every sentence he utters with "mummy"

Whilst playing with his car play mat and toy cars.....

DS - Mummy?
Me - Yes
DS - Mummy?
Me - Yes
DS - Mummy, this car needs to go the right way down the road
Me - Oh
DS - Mummy?
And off we go again ARRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

Please come and remind me that I waited years for him to talk and I'll miss him tomorrow when he goes back to school! (Actually its my birthday tomorrow so I will just enjoy the peace and quiet, but I will miss him on Wednesday!!)

Sorry, just needed to scream.....

Mine did the same and wasn't autistic Grin

valiumredhead · 09/01/2012 16:44

isn't autistic - you get my drift!

Frostyfoxy · 09/01/2012 16:48

I do Valium! I know it isn't restricted to autistic kids, don't really know why I had to add that bit! Blush

Love the name btw (got any spare!!??)

Also ds went through a stage of calling me by my first name too - actually it went on for nearly a year - that drove me bonkers too Grin

My name? Oh thanks, another mums netter named me as I couldn't think of one Grin

Frostyfoxy · 09/01/2012 16:54

DS calls dp by his first name sometimes too! I suppose that is just another phase to be added to the list!!

OP posts:
valiumredhead · 09/01/2012 16:57

Yet another one Wink

CatpussRoastingByAnOpenFire · 09/01/2012 17:39

DS is 15. He still does this! "Mum",...
next sentence "Mum"...
Every sentence doesnt NEED to start with Mum you know!!!!!

Frostyfoxy · 09/01/2012 17:42

OMG Catpuss!!! You mean to say this phase will last for another 9 years at least???!!!! Shock

CatpussRoastingByAnOpenFire · 09/01/2012 17:44

Well either that or my 15yo has the speech patterns of a 6yo with Autism! Grin Which may be entirely possible!

4madboys · 09/01/2012 17:45

oh god ds3 does this, and if i am talkign to dp he will say 'mum mum mum mum' ad infinitum, i am like WHAT!!!

i think all mine have gone through phases of it, sooo irritating!

CatpussRoastingByAnOpenFire · 09/01/2012 17:45

Blush Sorry, that probably wasnt entirely appropriate, ignore me, I was just being a tit!

Lifeissweet · 09/01/2012 17:48

I feel the same - by DS is deaf and didn't say the word until he was nearly 5. It began as 'Dubdub' but has become a clear and unmistakable 'Mummy!' now (at 6 yrs old). I nearly cried the first time he said it - now I nearly cry because he doesn't stop! I only have to leave his sight and 'Mummy, Mummy, Mummy...MUMMY!!!'

Aaaaarghhh.

pjmama · 09/01/2012 17:49

After a recent "mummy mummy mummy!" day I told my 5 year old I was going to change my name. He thought for a second, then said "mother...?"

You just can't win!

JustHecate · 09/01/2012 17:50

I mostly get called daddy or

Haribojoe · 09/01/2012 17:51

Mine all do it, I got so hung up on it once whilst waiting in an airport with DS1 that I counted how many times he said it and worked out it averaged once a minute!

Frequently drives me mad but I try and remind myself that there will be plenty of years without hearing it all the time once they've flown the nest and that then I may even miss it Grin

MogTheForgetfulCat · 09/01/2012 19:31

Oh, this drives me spare on a bad day Grin. I do not speak to my friends or husband by starting every sentence with '[Name], [.......]' because it would be so annoying!

DS2 is the worst for this, he often gets sidetracked in the middle of a sentence and starts again - including the 'Mummy' bit. Gah! I will try to remind myself that there may come a day when I will miss it.

2rebecca · 09/01/2012 19:36

I love the fact that my teenagers sometimes still call me mummy (if none of their friends are around and they aren't trying to be cool) Agree the mummy mummy mummy phase as young children was horrible. "just say what you want to say and stop mummying me all the time"

2rebecca · 09/01/2012 19:38

Must admit though that my husband tends to mumble and because he doesn't start his comments to me with "Rebecca...." he's often half way through the sentence before I stop thinking about whatever I was thinking about and listen to him so saying my name first has advantages as he gets annoyed with me asking him to repeat whatever he has just said as I missed the first bit.

OffDownTheGardenToEatWorms · 09/01/2012 19:44

Frosty I posted something similar about my DS many months back and one of my lovely MN friends gave me a link to - it helps honestly it does, Grin

Frostyfoxy · 09/01/2012 20:00

Thank you all for sharing your experiences too!

I am trying too to think there may be some time in the distant future that I will miss being called mummy, but as others have said, at this moment in time, I really remain unconvinced!! Hmm

Catpuss, don't worry about being inappropriate or anything - I take comments like that in the context that it is meant! Grin

ODTGTEW - I thought that was funny thanks! My ds watched it too and was rolling about laughing - so much that I didn't hear what was said at the end but didn't dare play it again in case it was something DS would repeat at a very inappropriate moment!!

Thank goodness it is now bathtime and then bed so the "mummy's" will at least slow down a bit till he is finally asleep!

Frostyfoxy · 09/01/2012 20:02

ODTGTEW - managed to watch it on my own now and realised he could have repeated it!! Grin
