Kayano · 09/01/2012 15:56

I've got them coming out of my damn ears!!! Taking being on leave as a chance to sort them out now. I have took them all off shelves and cleaned shelves

However I now have a (very) hard decision that needs quick answers...

Do I sort them by genre (childrens/ fantasy/ reference/ general fiction) or just alphabetical by author.

Or just whatever looks best?

I have uncovered in my search of the house lots of old books I had forgotten I owned, such as my Grandads hardback dickens collection and old school favourites such as the worst witch and please Mrs Butler!!

Sorting by Genre however is confusing me. ESP re fantasy and children and classics! The princess Bride? Fantasy or children? George MacDonald - Back of the north wind... Children or classic?!

Gah!

Posting here for traffic as am about to get started

Wwyd? AIBU to have hoarded so many books?

i would do it by genre because the book will be easier to find

Nixea · 09/01/2012 15:58

YADNBU! I adore book and would kick my family out of the house to make more room for them if I could!!

Sort roughly by genre and put individual books into whichever category you think of first otherwise you'll never find them again if you try to be 'correct'!

Nixea · 09/01/2012 15:59

Oh and Please Mrs Butler, this boy call Derek Drew....

So many memories!! :D

LisasCat · 09/01/2012 16:00

I have a friend who, at the suggestion of a fancy pants interior design magazine, sorted her books according to the dominant colour of the spine! So there's another option. Albeit a wanky one. (Even she now regrets it, because she can't find anything.)

I personally do all fiction by author, and then non-fiction by subject.

EXmrsmascarahead · 09/01/2012 16:00

My books are organised Fiction - Alphabetical, Non-fiction - Genre then alphabetical

Kayano · 09/01/2012 16:00

Last night my mum got really mad...
And three a jam tart at my dad... Grin

I also found 'my naughty little sister' and some Judy Blume! Omg Grin

I once, for a while had mine sorted by "where will I look when I want that particular book and I want it NOW?" So series tended to be together, but not necessarily all the books by one author, non-fiction and reference and text books migrated together, my childhood favourites were together and more or less by series but not all by author and so on.
Now I have got four less book cases and finally got rid of a load of books recently because I had to either get rid of the books or send the DCs to boarding school and can't find a damn thing. The books hide from me too though, and move around the house on their own.

BaronessOrczy · 09/01/2012 16:01

Ooh I loved The Worst Witch!

By genre and then roughly grouped by type - alphabetical drives me crazy as it's so hard to maintain

nickelhasababy · 09/01/2012 16:01

yanbu.
i sort mine by how they look best.
no system, but i just know where they all are...

tillyfernackerpants · 09/01/2012 16:02

I do mine alphabetical by author's surname, because I always know the author's name. Like you said, by genre means a book could be in more than one place.

I realise I may need to get more of a life Grin

snuffaluffagus · 09/01/2012 16:03

I have books coming out of my ears too, we need more shelves but I have tried to group them by author.

tillyfernackerpants · 09/01/2012 16:03

Now I feel better, having x-posted and realising there are others who seem to spend as much time as me deciding how to order books!

tomverlaine · 09/01/2012 16:06

I basically have fiction alphabetic (with Fantasy/Sci fi separate), and non-fiction by subject. However certain of my bookshelves aren't big enough for certain books- so big books are together. Also I always seem to run out of steam /time/space when reorganising so the alphabet is loosely applied at the end.

DP always wants me to get rid of them - I have got rid of a few over the years (crap chicklit) but i don't want to get rid of anymore!

ggirl · 09/01/2012 16:06

hahah I did the wanky colour coded sorting..looked fab but not practical at all .

Anyway i am as of today getting rid of my books for good Shock

Have currently about 10 boxes waiting to go to oxfam. I am decluttering , has taken me years to realise that space and light are more important to me than shelves of books.

nickelhasababy · 09/01/2012 16:07

i don't bother at home.
i've got enough books to organize at work
i don't want my home to look like a bookshop.
Wink

GirlWithALlamaTattoo · 09/01/2012 16:09

Mine are vaguely by genre, but partly by which shelf they'll fit on. The only ones I can reliably lay my hands on quickly are poetry and recipes.

GlueSticksEverywhere · 09/01/2012 16:12

My Dh rearranged all the books by size! I can't find anything but he still insists it was the best way.

MabelLucyAttwell · 09/01/2012 16:13

I have 1000+ books all on shelves. They are in subject order eg fiction, humour, biography, reference. history etc and then author name. They are all listed on my computer, too, so that, if I want to find one, I look it up and then know exactly where to go for it. If I have disposed of a book, details will be on the computer eg sold, lent to whom, given to charity shop etc.

While we are talking about books, has anyone else read those fabulous books by Amanda Egan - Diary of a Mummy Misfit and Darker Side of a Mummy Misfit? I laugh out loud at them
in places because it so reminds me of my own life - and will remind you of yours, too.

Kayano · 09/01/2012 16:14

I also have 300 graphic novels which I intend to sell ASAP Blush

They are going in a box by series. It's awful. Have now sorted by genre but I'm also doing alphabetical within each genre. What a faff!

fedupofnamechanging · 09/01/2012 16:19

I bought floor to ceiling bookshelves that cover one entire wall, so all books are together, then allocated some shelves for each child and then grouped the books according to series. I tried to put all books by one author together, but within that, series groups.

I've not grouped by genre as lots of books cross over and it gets all confusing.

Buying a kindle would simplify future purchases.

Whatmeworry · 09/01/2012 16:19

Size....what fits on which shelf. after that vaguely by genre/subjec.

Kladdkaka · 09/01/2012 16:21

Mine are ordered and tidied by author and how much I like them. The bookcase nearest my desk is the neatest with all my favourite authors perfectly lined up. The further away from this position the shelf, the more disorganised and unpopular the books. The bookcase in the darkest corner of the attic is a dusty, chaotic heap of old text books, half read books, and ones I never got round to returning to the school library.

Great to know I'm not alone in wanting to organise books in a vaguely anal way! Ours are done by genre and then roughly by height order since they look neater that way.

Flanelle · 09/01/2012 16:23

By spine colour. Or autobiographically, in the order you acquired them in.
