They should have treated him like any other customer and not set up a special camera to 'make sure he hadn't not paid by accident' Confused

I can't imagine them doing this for anyone else Hmm

I used to live in the street where he lived and saw him all the time around Henley/in tesco. He was always really nice.

Popbiscuit · 09/01/2012 19:03

Those self-checkouts are the work of the devil. I'm sure mix-ups like that happen all the time. Has anyone ever tried to go through one with a small child in tow? It's so frustrating it's almost comical.

LynetteScavo · 09/01/2012 21:44

My small child kept picking up the bag, which confused the machine, so I had to ask for assistance. I got very short shrift and was told sternly not to pick up the shopping bag. "Yes, I understand that, unfortunately my children don't!" I replied equally sternly. (Yes, I had already had words with them).

LynetteScavo · 09/01/2012 21:44

My DC, that is.

Popbiscuit · 09/01/2012 21:50

Grin Exactly!

AKissIsNotAContract · 09/01/2012 21:53

I hope he'll become the new presenter of supermarket sweep. I miss that programme.

cheeseandbiscuitsplease · 09/01/2012 22:20

I wonder if the police made him empty his bags out then tell them what he planned on making with his ingredients :)

Rhinestone · 09/01/2012 22:44

I don't understand all the sympathy and 'mental health problems' excuses.

He's a thief, pure and simple.

festi · 09/01/2012 22:46

AWT has had quite a troubled life, I never liked him much untill I watched a documentry or something about his life, after that I had more respect for him in a way. whio knows what goes through peoples minds when they do this kind of thing even it was an arrogance he has admitted and will seek help fair play to him, he didnt try to play it down did he.

festi · 09/01/2012 22:52

nice rinestone, maybe a little humility is required to understand what leads people to make these choices, does not mean it should not be delt with appropriatly. I dont think there is Ever a pure and simple about these things.

Feminine · 09/01/2012 22:54

Its all gone downhill for him since can't cook -won't cook

I think he and Bono are blending in to one person.

Rhinestone · 09/01/2012 23:01

I have plenty of humility thanks festi. Plus integrity.

I've never understood why when a poor person steals something it's theft but when a rich person steals something it's 'mental health issues' or a 'breakdown'.

Theft is theft.

AntonyWorralThompsonIsNotMyBIL · 09/01/2012 23:02

Aldi he was already on a suspended sentence for a previous theft from a house, and had been in prison before that for a theft from a different house. AFAIK, it was the suspended sentence that ensured he went back to prison this time. IL's are keeping quiet about it and we only have a few lines from the local paper to go on, so that's all I really know. He got 30 weeks.

WorraLiberty · 09/01/2012 23:03

Aldiwhore I don't know if it was a mistake because the link says he's accused of stealing 5 times in 16 days Confused

Cross posted!

I was talking about AWT obviously, not that poster's BIL Blush

I agree rhinestone .

EquestrianStatue · 09/01/2012 23:06

The Tesco self checkouts seem to hate me. I nearly stole a croissant once & couldn't work out how to un-steal it...i'd put two in one bag, chose it from the menu but pressed quantity of '1' instead of '2'. the bagging area didn't seem to notice, but i couldn't add the second croissant without being able to add something else to the bagging area IYKWIM. I ended up shouting at it

ReduceRecycleRegift · 09/01/2012 23:11

When I worked in a supermarket they would follow usual suspects with a camera whoever they were. It doesn't sound unusual to me.

DoesBuggerAll · 09/01/2012 23:19

EquestrianStatue - I did that once too. I had to call a member of staff to sort it out since I certainly wasn't going to walk out of the store with the unpaid for item. Mind you, on more than one occasion we have arrived home and discovered items on of our DC (when they were toddlers) have shoplifted without our knowledge!

WorraLiberty · 09/01/2012 23:21

I didn't realise they installed secret cameras for joe public too

I shall withdraw my frothing beserk-ness for now Grin

I thought it might be the early signs of dementia.Sad

If he's done it 5 times, why didn't they nick him the 3rd or 4th time?

festi · 09/01/2012 23:44

I've never understood why when a poor person steals something it's theft but when a rich person steals something it's 'mental health issues' or a 'breakdown'.

well that is not what your original post implied.

pure and simple is what you said. like I said I dont think there is ever a pure and simple, always a reason. Granted no excusse but plenty of reasons why anyone who steals does so.

Rhinestone · 09/01/2012 23:47

He stole stuff. He had no intention of paying.

That is theft and the name for some who commits theft is a thief.

WorraLiberty · 09/01/2012 23:50

People steal for many different reasons

Those reasons won't be known until he's standing before a Judge

Blah blah mental health problems blah

I have mental health problems

I'm not an effing thief
