Is it OK to put guinea piggies outside in the winter? They're in a proper hutch, but I feel a bit bad evicting them from the warm kitchen!
They could go upstairs in the junk spare room,
Would it be too cruel?

Outside is too cold for guinea pigs in winter.

peeriebear · 08/01/2012 21:49

If they're used to indoors, to put them out in midwinter is rather mean. Give them the spare room or forego your chair til summer.

MissVerinder · 08/01/2012 21:50

I would wait until summer. Piggens are quite sensitive to the change in temperature, but it's also the damp weather that does them.

southeastastra · 08/01/2012 21:50

my rabbits are kept outside all year round and i bought some really soft hay from the garden centre which i stuff in so they have to make tunnels, didn't think guinea pigs needed to be inside, also it's really warm for january

Meglet · 08/01/2012 21:51

yabu. Piggies aren't that robust.

Put them in the spare room. Mine were always inside in the winter months, in the summer they had the shed for night-times.

carrotsandcelery · 08/01/2012 21:53

It would be a terrible shock to them in the winter. They might well die.

mercibucket · 08/01/2012 21:55

mine are still outside this year as it's been so mild here but I wouldn't have put them out now if they'd been used to being inside - poor things won't have grown a winter coat or be used to that level of cold. can you wait til spring?

coccyx · 08/01/2012 21:57

Meanie, put them upstairs

Hippymum89 · 08/01/2012 21:58

Grin
GlitterySkulls · 08/01/2012 22:01

i agree, it's too cold.

plus, i'd be worried about foxes getting to them.

carrotsandcelery · 08/01/2012 22:01

Grin glad to hear it Hippy. They probably don't need the heating unless it gets really cold but they don't like cold drafts or damp.

Sorry, didn't mean to be alarmist. They can be quite sensitive to sudden change though.

MeconiumHappens · 08/01/2012 22:20

Have you got a shed/garage? Agree that inside to outside in winter is a bit extreme, although would be fine to move them out in warmer weather then leave them there (shed/garage if extreme crappy weather tho).

NearlyMrsCustardsHardHat · 08/01/2012 23:12

I've always kept Guinea Pigs and Rabbits outside no matter what the weather and they've all lived to ripe old ages! Chuck em outside!

Inside, and preferably inside all year round. Guinea pigs need temperatures similar to humans. I wouldn't want to be put outside in mid-winter, however much hay you gave me.

Dee03 · 09/01/2012 20:25

I've always kept my guinea pigs outside all year round Smile

barbie007 · 09/01/2012 20:27

Poor piggies! Mine come indoors from Nov to March....put them up in your spare room

gordyslovesheep · 09/01/2012 20:32

mine live in the shed with a cover on them - outside proper is too cold this time of year x Buy a shed Grin

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 09/01/2012 20:51

buy a shed, don't like the thought of them in a kitchen TBH

Don't put them outside if they've not been out all autumn building up a winter coat.

(Having them in your kitchen sounds revolting though).
