To really not like the term OMG?

Allthesanityinme · 08/01/2012 18:14

So I'm a Christian and so to me terms like 'Oh my God', 'For God's sake' etc are blasphemy. Now I know that not everyone is a Christian or religious in any way so I am going to come into contact with these things whether I like it or not. OMG annoys me more than any of the others though and really makes me cring everytime I see it or hear people say it. I think its perhaps because it seems to just be trivialising Blasphemy if that makes sense at all, and trivialising religion/God in general. Am I the only one?

Are you offended by the terms/exclaimations Cor Blimey, Goodness Gracious, ruddy heck,, darn it, doggone, dang it, Jepus Creepus...? Because aren't these, along with OMG, ways of not actually blaspheming?

squeakytoy · 08/01/2012 18:19

Most christians that I know, myself included, dont have any problem with it..

Would you consider someone saying "for heavens sake" as blaspheming too?

MillyR · 08/01/2012 18:19

I try not to say it. I'm not religious but my parents are. They are fine about words like fuck and bollocks, but don't like blasphemy at all.

I think it is rather rude to blaspheme, but OMG is very ingrained in language now.

I think you might need to calm down a bit OP. There are way worse things that are said. For me OMFG is really distasteful but OMG? Meh - it's really not a big bad thing. In any event I'm not sure it IS blasphemy in the strictest sense of the definition so you are being a little bit over picky. IMO, of course.

Areallytiredwoman · 08/01/2012 18:24

I am not religious but genuinely do not mean to blaspheme when I use those phrases, they are just habit, I don't think of the meaning behind them and mean no offence.
A colleague is a practising Christian and I have been known to blurt out 'Christ on a bike', feel rather embarrassed afterwards and I would hate for anyone to feel that I am trivialising their beliefs so make an effort when I am around him not to say those sorts of things (FWIW he doesn't appear to notice or care when I do say them)

Pandemoniaa · 08/01/2012 18:25

I dislike OMG as written. In our family it is used with deep sarcasm and a fake American accent. But then I can't do with any txt spk acronyms.

If you are a Christian (which I'm not) then I can see why it could be seen as offensive. Sort of. But YABU to assume the rest of the world feels as you do or consider that it is other than a mild expletive.

WreckOfTheBeautiful · 08/01/2012 18:26

Similar to the 'knackered' thread, I remember as a smallish child I once used the phrase cor blimey in front of my grandmother. Catsbumface hardly does justice to her expression - apparently it's a corruption of 'God blind me' and is thus Unsuitable.

YANBU OP, although I'm not religious I can understand why you feel that way and I try not to blaspheme as I think it is disrespectful to people that do believe, although I can't pretend it never slips out Blush

SiamoNellaMerda · 08/01/2012 18:27

Just done a bit of Good Old Googling - and it seems the majority view amongst Christians is that it IS blasphemy. Or not. Depending on what you meant when you said it and what you do to correct your sin. If you believe it to be a sin. It's all so frightfully complicated isn't it!

Allthesanityinme · 08/01/2012 18:28

Wow lots of quick responses. I would certainly prefer Bollocks over OMG and would probably prefer Fuck/Fucks sake too. These words don't really have any meaning to me where as God, Jesus etc do have very strong meaning to and I suspose I therefore don't like to see them being trivialised. To me OMG is blasheming even though its just initials. I'm not particularly angry about it though. Like I said I accept that its something I will encounter in daily life and there are much worse things that people could say/do. Its just a niggling thing that makes me cringe.

I just hear it as 'gosh' or 'goodness' in my head. At least when it is an acronym it's possible to do that.

Unlurked · 08/01/2012 18:35

I accidentally said 'God no!' to the minister of the church I ran a toddler group at. She didn't react at all but I instantly went bright red. Still cringe thinking about it now!

Allthesanityinme · 08/01/2012 18:35

I think that the way Areallytiredwoman explains it makes sense. I'm sure that people just use it without thinking about the meaning and are not going out of their way to offend.

Pandemoniaa I do always kind of imagine it said in a whiney teenage voice when I see it written down, and it reminds me of awful, cheesey teen movies so I suspose this doesn't help.

I didn't answer your question though, YANBU to dislike it. If I knew you and knew you didn't like it I wouldn't use any of those phrases around you.

squeakytoy · 08/01/2012 18:42

I would certainly prefer Bollocks over OMG and would probably prefer Fuck/Fucks sake too.

I certainly wouldnt!!

My granddaughter went through a phase at about 4yo when she like to be very dramatic, and say "Oh. My. God" if you asked her to do anything, in true Kevin the teenager style.... I definately wouldnt have wanted to hear her saying "Oh. For. Fucks. Sake" !!

MillyR · 08/01/2012 18:43

Squeakytoy, the OP has an explanation as to why she prefers fuck to OMG.

What is your explanation as to why fuck is worse?
