To be annoyed at this last minute request list

Dd1 goes to a dance group which is putting on some shows in theatres soon. She's the least talented there and struggles a bit, to say the least but really enjoys it. When I heard about the shows, I checked that they definitely wanted her there, but they were very keen to include her.

So I signed her up months and months ago. I had to sign a form, promising that she'd do all the performances and all the extra rehearsals. We were given dates for the rehearsals but not performances, so essentially I had to sign for unspecified dates. I also paid extra for all the rehearsal times totally up front, since she had to do them all anyway, I thought I'd get all the costs out of the way.

Well, she's now gone to the third from last rehearsal and I have eventually managed to get dates out of them. Had to request, they still weren't readily available. Luckily they all seem to be doable.

But they've now presented me with a list of things they need. You'd have thought, they'd have mentioned it before now?

I've already bought the white t-shirt, black t-shirt, white leggings, black leggings, tracksuit, white pumps, black pumps, which she needs for general dance events.

I've now been asked for another white t-shirt, white knickers, black knickers, white boxers, black boxers, black court shoes, black nylon tights, a silver necklace, black hairbands.

AIBU to think this should have been mentioned when we signed up? The shoes is a bit of a problem. I have real problems getting shoes for dd1 anyway due to extremely thin feet and weak ankles. I'm loathe to buy smart shoes that she can't double up for school, but they want some with a little heel, which I'm not happy about (and not convinced she'll be able to walk let alone dance).

All the underwear!! She's got millions of knickers, but they're all patterned etc. I may be able to get a mixed black and white pack of knickers, but I didn't even know girls wore boxers. Where can I get all this stuff without buying 4 packs of undies that she doesn't need?

Annoyed!

buy boys boxers and sew up the fly

ChrissyHynde · 08/01/2012 18:14

Welcome to the world of dancing! I frequently have to pay out money for costumes that are worn for 3 minutes x 2 performances. The next show day comes around and guess what, new costumes!!

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 08/01/2012 18:14

Why are they specifying what underwear she has to wear? Surely it will be covered?

dealer · 08/01/2012 18:17

They say about little skirts, which I understand will fly up. That's OK, but surely you can't tell the difference between knickers and boxers at a distance.

It's not a high level performance at all, so I think that's over the top.

Primark do girls boxers in lots of colours. I feel your pain though, dd1 used to do dance and I felt like we were always paying out for something.

Ineedacleaneriamalazyslattern · 08/01/2012 18:33

Primark definitely for girls boxers in fact loads of the shops do them now.
As for shoes does the dance shop you go to not do stage shoes? They are black with a little heel and made really for the purpose she needs them for.

Panzee · 08/01/2012 18:41

We were always told to wear massive 'passionkiller' knickers (like Sloggis) when dancing, in case they rode up or gaped or anything. It's amazing what can peek out of costumes in the middle of a high kicking routine! Blush

Agree that the dance shop is the way to go for stage shoes. They'll be easier to walk and dance in than normal shoes.

It's a bit annoying that it's such late notice, but it sounds more like you don't see the point because you don't think she's much good. I can understand that, but if she's keen you might have to bite the bullet and do it! :o

thefirstmrsrochester · 08/01/2012 18:42

Maybe other kids in the dance school will have spares or outgrown dance wear you could buy from them? Or try eBay?
It's a world of financial pain op, I sympathise.
My dd does ballet - I near fainted when I found out the cost of a classical tutu.
www.danceweardirect.co.uk are great for shoes.

Oh

And 'break a leg' to your DD x

The marks and spencer sale racks have come up trumps in the past with single pairs of knickers/boxers.

There isn't a dance shop. It's just a woman that runs a class in a hall for all abilities, partly because her daughter is blind.

There are kids with and without sn, my daughter is very mild, but easily the least co-ordinated despite some others being disabled. They have previously done carnivals and things which I think is perfect for this sort of group. I just wanted a fun-type thing, but of course when this came up dd wanted to do it.

YANBU but this is how dance classes are unfortunately. Personally I'd just get one pair of black and one pair of White knickers and try to borrow the rest. Or charity shop it the non-underwear stuff?
