spend 4 hours doing housework yesterday, woken up and the house looks like a bomb has hit it.

i don't want a show home, but i am getting so ticked off that it is never clean and tidy grrrrrr

Are you me?
I want a neat place to live in.

Sparklingbrook · 08/01/2012 09:46

I'm with you McHappy. The rest of the Sparklings don't seem to notice the mess either. Angry
I clean the whole house on a Friday-you wouldn't think so looking at it now. I might take pictures this Friday to show to people when they come round. Grin

happydotcom · 08/01/2012 09:52

I just take my glasses off............it doesn't seem as bad!!

DurhamDurham · 08/01/2012 09:53

You can't just tidy up once and expect it to stay perfect all week. Just keep on tidying as you go and get all members of the house to help you. It's probably their mess. I'm always handing my girls things to take upstairs and put away when they go up. Some days my house looks better than others but it's never a mess. I don't ever spend hours at a time doing housework but I keep on top of it on a daily basis. However it helps that all four of us are out all day during the week, there's no one there to make a mess!!

BandOMothers · 08/01/2012 09:58

i do the same but I know that the reason is that there's far too much clutter here...I need less STUFF in the house!

Sirzy · 08/01/2012 10:01

For it to stay clean all family members old enough to need to help keep on top of it. Otherwise any effort will be pointless!

Ds is 2 and is already learning to help tidy toys away, put washing in the basket and dishes by the sink etc.

clam · 08/01/2012 10:03

I feel exactly the same. It's just the never-ending grind that depresses me. Especially as it's not all my mess. Need to turf the kids out of bed and get them to tidy up from last night (DH and I were out). Pizza and snack debris everywhere downstairs after I left it immaculate.

McHappyPants2012 · 08/01/2012 10:06

i do a few blitzes in the day, but i am out numbered 2 to 1.

i am way behind on my washing and am slowly just losing heart as it never seems to last

I am member of this club. Somedays I dread going back home if I go out. My heart sinks at what I am going to find when I go back in.

I used to have a pretty immaculate home but over the years I have caved in. My standards now are pretty low and even now I am miserable at the state of my home. After years and years of tidying and cleaning for hours on end and for it all to be messed up within a few hours has made me loose the will to keep on top of it anymore.

I now tend to do the bare minimum. The only thing is I can never have anyone come to the house as I am so ashamed.

It the mess that gets me. H hoards loads of useless shit, eldest child is messy and forgetful (also very lovely) but definately a scatterbarin. Youngest child is more my camp and a bit of a clean freak. At the moment her room is live a haven in this house as she has cleaned and tidied it beautifully and has found a home for all her Xmas gifts. I find myself just going in there and sitting on the bed because its nice to be in there.

If the house was at least tidyish I could do the cleaning but every room is just so messy I have to spend at least half an hour de cluttering it before I can even start to clean, vacume, dust.

Aaaaarrrrrgggghhhhh!!!!

DurhamDurham · 08/01/2012 10:11

clam I would have been v annoyed to have got home form a night out and found pizza boxes left lying around. Even if they were in bed I've had told them to get them moved pretty quickly. You have to enforce it or you'll just feel like their skivvy. My girls are quite good, they wouldn't leave pizza boxes lying around, they know it's not worth the fall out if they do.

ZeldaUpNorth · 08/01/2012 10:15

I was just wondering this morning how people cope. I can either have a tidy house, have a social life or play with my kids, i find it impossible to do them all! If i have 1 day at the shops or visiting a friend the house is a right mess and washing piles high after just 1 day (i do tend to put a wash in before i go out but still loads to do)

Next year my youngest starts nursery so i might have a bit more time to do things then.

I can cope if one room in the house is good. Usually this is the sitting room. Then i try to keep each room done at some point. So most of the time at least one and a half rooms are ok.

I am certainly no domestic goddess and I cant really cook much but my flat is always organised as we dont have much stuff and what we have we effectively store.

We have the trofast storage drawers from ikea and DD tidies up after herself after use. She is 3 but can manage to do that as its so simple she just chucks it all in and I shut it. Keep it minimalistic is my best tip.

molly3478 · 08/01/2012 10:33

I will add this is only a recent change before I had too much stuff and it used to look like we had been burgled as DD used to carry stuff from the bedroom and pour it out and with all the fiddly boxes and stuff couldnt manage to put it back so it looked awful. Since I bought extra trofast things she tidies before she is allowed more out and I hardly have to do anything I love it. We have s ame in bedroom and DH sticks stuff he uses in his own drawers and all clothes go in there folded straght after washing.

Meglet · 08/01/2012 10:38

Yanbu.

I have almost no storage space so have been clearing out toys and getting mum to store them. If I can be bothered I'll rotate them every so often or else I'll car boot them in the summer.

Washing always on radiators, airer and washing line. Not enough space in kitchen cupboards for everything we need.

Drives me up the wall.

molly3478 · 08/01/2012 10:40

Meglet what about these? I have them in bedroom and they are stacked 4 on top of 4. They probably look about crao but do the job.

I am very sad but I do get a thrill out of reuniting bits and pieces lying about with their boxes/owners. Found the necklace out of Cluedo today from Christmas and put it back in it's box. Grin

McHappyPants2012 · 08/01/2012 10:45

all the cheap storage options are out of the question, my son will break them in the matter of minutes.

i can't wait till the toy stage is over, as they take over the house

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 08/01/2012 10:45

As the children get older their belongings get smaller but more expensive. Sad

CrunchyFrog · 08/01/2012 10:46

Mine hit critical mass (again) so I blitzed yesterday. Kids at their dad's so 24 blissfully tidy hours!

But I hate housework more than I hate mess, so will continue being a messy fucker with occasional oases of tidy Grin

BupcakesandCunting · 08/01/2012 10:49

YANBU

Every sunday, I yearn for monday when the Cunting men will be back at work/school and my house can cease looking like it has been burgled.

trixie123 · 08/01/2012 10:49

you have to distinguish between clean and tidy. Clean is once a week hoovering, bathrooms etc daily swipe round the kitchen. Tidy is things in piles rather than scattered! DP refers to it as "surface" if its just stuff around the place like post, toys, laundry etc. I try to do it as and when I am in a room, so waiting for kettle to boil, empty dishwasher or clear draining board, upstairs for a nappy change, sweep up dirty clothes into basket etc. Once kids have gone to bed, toys get put in big wicker chests (£17 from Dunelm) or at least piled up neatly BEHIND the sofa so we are not looking at it all night Smile
