Currently renting a small flat and have been thinking about moving for the past few months. Now we've decided we want to be out in the next 4 weeks and are going to arrange some viewings on houses nearer our family. We haven't actually looked at anywhere in person yet, just online. Now DP has decided he wants to go out and start choosing stuff for the new house. Just doesn't seem right to me to be picking stuff when we haven't even picked which house we want yet! How will we know what we need apart from main stuff like fridge/freezer, washing machine etc? He's just been having a go at me cos I haven't thought about everything yet like where we will hire a moving van from, where to pack everything we own in to, sorting house out before we move etc. we only decided a couple of days ago that we would deffo move, give me a fucking chance!

Am I being unreasonable?

I doubt you could move in four weeks anyway, you have to give a months notice on your current property first and you havent another to move into yet.

Id already have quotes for moving costs too.

He is being ridiculous by the way.

hellhasnofury · 07/01/2012 12:49

YANBU, you need to know sizes before you buy. Are you looking to rent again?

Feminine · 07/01/2012 12:50

You are continuing to rent?

I suppose you will need those things quite quickly...but not knowing sizes etc I think you should wait.

If buying, then no! :)

Trills · 07/01/2012 12:52

YABU to think that you can be out in 4 weeks, unless you are happy to pay rent on two places at once for quite a while. You will probably have to give not just a month's notice but a full rental period's notice. e.g. if you pay your rent on the 1st of the month, then you have to give a full 1st-1st month of notice, so the earliest you could finish renting the current place is the 1st of March.

He is BU to be thinking of buying things for a house/flat when you don't know what it looks like yet, you don't know what is included or what size and shape the rooms are. If you are renting then often white goods (fridge/freezer, washing machine, cooker) are included even when the property is otherwise unfurnished.

If he is so keen to start planning things then he should be thinking about the practicalities of moving, not what you need after you get there. First things first.

But firstly - find somewhere to move to!

Hairynigel · 07/01/2012 12:52

Yes looking to rent again. Our landlords are pretty flexible and have said to just give them a bit of notice before we move so we've just done that.

Why would I have to give a frigging thought to how much petrol needs to go in to the moving van yet?!

Then yes, he is jumping the gun a bit!

Maybe he is just excited Grin

good luck :)

CogitoErgoSometimes · 07/01/2012 13:02

YANBU... And if he's 'having a go' about trivial stuff then you move house and leave him behind. Kill two birds with one stone.

mrsjay · 07/01/2012 13:16

YAVBU he is being over organised and a bit daft and maybe excited about moving , and you wouldnt be able to store new stuff anyway , cant measure room sizes blah di blah ,

mrsjay · 07/01/2012 13:23

oh dear sorry op i meant to say YANBU not what i said ignore me Grin

bettybat · 07/01/2012 13:27

I don't understand why you'd buy "white goods" for rented accommodation. Possibly washing machine, as they're not always provided - though pretty standard these days! - but fridge and freezer are definitely provided. Seems like a colossal waste of money.

Regardless the simple answer is that if he thinks this info is needed pronto, can't he just research it himself?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 07/01/2012 13:39

Yes, I don't understand buying white goods. Not everywhere provides them, but TBH I would avoid a rented place that didn't come with them, unless you are very sure your next move afterwards will be to buy somewhere where they will fit.

I think you need to discuss things a lot more. You both need to agree what sort of place you want to rent, what the budget is and what the budget will be for moving and new stuff, and whose job it will be to do all the different tasks.

It will all go to pot if you each just assume the other one is already onboard with your plans.

he's jumping the gun
