to be fed up with with the chemist

Ok..ill, cranky in a generally bad mood, so don't think IABU, but maybe I am. All of us, me, DH, adult DS, home ill with this misery of an infection/virus going around. Slightly different symptoms, DH fever and stuffed nose, DS throat, ear pain, and cough and me, terrible lingering cough that keeps me up most of the night.

So, I am nominated to go out this morning to fetch basic food provisions and to purchase our medicines of choice. Adult DS has actually been to GP yesterday and given antibiotics but wants Nurofen Plus to kill earache pain while waiting for the antibiotics to kick in, DH wants Night Nurse and I want a night time cough syrup to dampen the cough and let me sleep.

I am at the counter of our local branch of very well known high street chain. Assistant seems to not be sharpest tool in the box had trouble with right and left when I was trying to tell her where medicine was on the shelf and certainly has no idea which cough syrup to recommend. I read a few labels and choose one myself and want to pay for my 3 items.

Cue assistant's cat's bum face. Goes off to talk to pharmacist. Computer says no. I can have the Nurofen Plus and either the Night Nurse or the cough syrup, not both. Explain again that they are for different people and I'm not planning to poison myself by way of over the counter meds.
Tough...not allowed. Choose cough syrup as it is chain's own brand and I have a cunning plan.

Ok, I live in a very big city with no shortage of chemists. Mutter evil incantations at big chain chemist and drag my aching body 100 yards down the road to next slightly smaller chain chemist to buy the Night Nurse. Mission accomplished.

Wonder how folks who live in small towns with only 1 chemist manage. Maybe they actually have sensible staff who can understand reason.

Phensedyl Dry Cough Linctus - contained pholchodine and ephedrine, I think.
Still listed in Malysia.
Was automatically added to any prescription for my parents or sister as I refused to go to the Drs yet again about having a cough. Tried all sorts and that was the only one that worked.
Last bottle I had mum got on holiday in Cornwall, but she had to sign the poisons register.

The pharmacist is governed by a regulatory body. He/she may loose their registration if they gave you both.

It is maddening, though.

Can't say i've heard of that one startail! (i've been working in pharmacy since 1993) Pholcodine linctus on its own you can buy, ephedrine I think has been done away with as over the counter oral medication in UK, although you can still get ephedrine nasal drops, whether it's worth trying them separately?

Grin

Bit of a hike to Malaysia to get the real deal!

YABU. It's their job to follow rules like that no matter how dumb you think they are

Happenstance · 07/01/2012 19:46

YABU we are not allowed to sell more than 2 analgesics, thats the rules it makes no difference if your buying cough medicine or calpol, not worth losing my job over.

mousyMouse · 07/01/2012 20:05

but what are people supposed to do who care for a house full of flu patients? or in my casr when I was pregnant and not sold medicines that would be ok for pregnant women anyway...

hiddenhome · 07/01/2012 20:22

The government treat us like idiots. I can't get castor oil for face cleansing in the chemists now. I have to order it online.

rainbowinthesky · 07/01/2012 20:25

You can't buy castor oil for cleansing? That is ridiculous!

mrsscoob · 07/01/2012 20:31

Thing is some people might take all those products you mentioned, not realising that some can't be taken together, end up seriously ill and the pharmacy would be in major trouble. So they do have to ask and do have to take the cautious route, that unfortunately is the law, so it is no use blaming them. However I do believe that the pharmacist can use their discretion on some things but if you had come across as rude in the pharmacy as you did on your post then maybe they didn't feel it was worth it!
