Call RSPCA?

threestepsforward · 06/01/2012 20:26

Call the RSPCA sukysue (I think it's 0300 1234 999). I'm sure you won't need to give your name.

Explain to them how serious it is - ie. puppies left outside with no shelter Sad

Please do it. My heart breaks thinking about them.

kiasport · 06/01/2012 20:27

Oh no, that's awful.

I would call the RSPCA too.

I wouldn't recommend this course of action if you are very scared of him but I will share this story.

My rescue dog was brought to a rescue centre as a puppy from the next door neighbour of her owner. He was a local drug dealer/thug and she'd seen him kicking her in the street.

She was worried about reporting him in case he knew it was her so in the end she knocked on his door and said 'if you don't want the puppy would you like me to find a new home for her?'

The guy replied he didn't fing care what she did with the fing stupid dog and handed her over. Neighbour brought him straight to the rescue as she didn't want to risk keeping the dog in case he changed his mind.

Said dog is five years old now and curled up on my knee as we speak.

threestepsforward · 06/01/2012 20:30

aw that's a lovely story kia
my boy's a rescue too, had him for 10 years now Smile
OP I'm sure RSPC will act on information given anonymously if you're worried about the repercussions of reporting him...

threestepsforward · 06/01/2012 20:31

sorry, meant lovely ending to your story!

MilitaryWag · 06/01/2012 20:45

Sounds like he is taking out his post split anger on these animals. Call RSPCA and lay it on thick otherwise they wont get involved (unless clear evidence of neglect/harm/cruelty) Have had a nightmare with them in the past. Have you ever spoken to this lad? Would it be possible to try and strike up a conversation about the puppies if you happen to see him and gauge his response? Do they look ok health wise? What breed are they?

Chattymummyhere · 06/01/2012 20:52

You can call the RSPCA however be warned they may well not do much depending on how the pups look and aslong as he answers their questions right.

We have someone call RSPCA on us because our "dog was severly underweight and left outside with a kennel too small for a jack russel size dog" < Told to us by the RSPCA what we had been reported for our dog was infact a 9week old GSD puppy that had a kennel so big my dad 6ft could fit into it.

anyway back on topic all they did was.

1, look at the dog (was very shocked to see a very well looked after PUP)
2, look at the kennel (again all fine, if it was not there they said all they would of advised is that the pup was not left outside for long periods or during rain)
3, was said pup insured (never asked to look at the paperwork)
4, was pup regisiered at a vets (asked for name of vets)
5, what was pup fed on
6, how long/offten is pup left alone

As long as he can answer those questions and the pups do not look neglected there is nothing the RSPCA can do.. Best thing to do may be to take pictures with time stamps to show the pups are left out for long periods? as proof im not sure on the laws reguarding recording someone shouting at their dogs/pups however I doubt again that the RSPCA would remove for being shouted at

threestepsforward · 06/01/2012 20:57

God how depressing nothing more immediate can be done Sad

I think the time stamped photos are a good idea if nothing can be done quickly. I think chattymum is right in that there's probably not much of a case to be built up from shouting, so concentrate on a clear welfare issue, being left outside in shit weather for long periods and try and build up a case for them to work with.

Is RSPCA the only port of call for things like this? I was racking my brains but couldn't think of any other alternative...

So sad.

kiasport · 06/01/2012 21:04

I knew what you meant threesteps. That neighbour did a really great thing, I think about that person sometimes and think what a lovely life my dog got because of them.

OP - does he leave them outside at night, or when he goes out. Imagine he left the gate open and they escaped to a rescue

Chattymummyhere · 06/01/2012 21:22

Kiasport thats a good idea unless he has them mircochipped, he would proberly get them back with a slap on the wrist for leaving them alone and a "check up" to make sure he was sticking to not leaving them alone for long periods outside unless he builds/buys them a run.

Inthepotty · 06/01/2012 22:34

Maybe an idea to repost this in the Doghouse section? Someone over there may be able to recommend the best course of action. I don't think the RSPCA get involved tbh.

MissVerinder · 06/01/2012 22:51

kiasport

:) My thoughts exactly.

You may be suprised all my litter left having had all their jabs and microchipped and extras, depends where he got them from also alot of vets do an offer where you get both sets of jabs and mircochip for £60 rather than £40,£40 and £20

Suky, so sorry to hear this about your neighbour.

Firstly, I'd try the RSPCA as previously suggested. It's possible they may be able to help.

If they are not able/willing to (which wouldn't surprise me, sadly) then please contact your local Dog Warden and ask them to intervene under the Animal Welfare Act. Emphasise the fact the pups are out all night and alone for long periods. I'd also report this to your local Councillor and press them for action.

If this doesn't work the other option is to report the dogs as being noisy or a nuisance (e.g. flies from poo in the garden) and keep on at the Council that way. If you are living in social housing ,it's worth having a chat with your local housing office, as often tenants can only keep dogs under certain circumstances, and again, you could claim his leaving them outside (and all the noise they make) is Anti Social Behaviour which they are now obliged to investigate/manage more thoroughly.

Thank you for being such a responsible neighbour and caring about these tiny, helpless little creatures.

villagebikermum · 07/01/2012 01:50

Agree with Scuttle

However...I called RSPCA as a neighbour was leaving his cat outside 24/7 with no food/shelter during all the snow and icy weather during the previous winter. They did nothing as obviously all their questions were answered correctly.

Eventually another neighbour knocked on his door and offered to take the cat off his hands. The cat is now well fed, warm and very spoilt. Sometimes the direct approach is better?
