I don't think I am a food hoarder but my DP does baulk at the size of the shop orders when they arrive. Doesn't stop him from eating them though Hmm

However, his parents never have the cupboards/fridge full, and even over Xmas they didn't really have enough food. We had to do several food runs over the 5 days we were there and even then we had no bread for breakfast on the 27th. twitches

It's all relative I suppose!

Bloody hell, I eat emergency chips about once a week. I didn't know they were only to be used in the event of an apolcalypse.

As for having food in 'just in case', I realise there's a chance that one day I might be too lazy incapacitated to go to the shop, so I have a loaf and a pint in the freezer, and anybody who thinks I'm a pathetic worrier can shit off. I have cupboards full of tins. I'm happy.

Most of my stockpilling is due to buying loads of stuff when it's on offer, rather than because I think we might be unable to buy baked beans/tinned tomatoes/dishwasher tablets for three months for example.

I can always make a meal when people turn up unexpectedly, even if it is beans on toast with a glass of milk. I know what I do is right.

We don't possess frozen chips but always make sure we have some leftover curries or sauces in the freezer and some tins in the cupboard for when we get home and realise teh fridge is bare. We both work FT and usually get home after the shops have shut. If we didn't have well-stocked cupboards and freezers we would not eat that night! Our "emergency food" tends to consist of store-cupboard ingredients and frozen leftover from homecooked meals rather than processed crap.

I used to have a gas fridge. Well, it was 1964.

Frozen chips are the only kind in our house, but I've never tried frozen roast potatoes. I've always had a stockpile of food In case we run out of money but most months we seem to end up using some of it in the week before pay day while I'm on maternity. Also a lot is things I've cooked double amounts then frozen half so good for emergencies when I can't be arsed or don't have time to cook.

northerngirl41 · 06/02/2012 16:54

What happens in our house is that DH eats everything/anything which requires no preparation - so anything which is in the fridge, anything which can be eaten straight from can etc... Therefore by having it frozen or Blush in a Fray Bentos pie tin requiring cooking means there is actually food in the house when the kids need fed. It's not big, it's not clever, it certainly isn't nutritious, but it does fill the gap!
