to be getting so worried about DH's liver scan tomorrow?

He was diagnosed with a fatty liver (ultrasound and a weird liver 'flick' test) a couple of years back and told to lose some weight - which he has done, though NOT off his tummy, which is (I gather?) the worst place to store weight especially if you're prone to fatty liver. A recent blood test showed that some of his liver enzymes were still extremely elevated so he's off tomorrow for an ultrasound. Right now, I'm getting so worked up about it that it would be GOOD news just to hear that it's fatty liver problem and he still needs to lose weight (if that happens I will be doing a lot of shouting and emptying cupboards of treats...) because I'm chronically health-anxious and getting paranoid it's something worse...

I know raised liver enzymes can also be just one-off in a blood test (big night of drinking, infection, medication) but it's the third blood test in two years that has revealed the raised enzymes so I highly doubt it's that.

Which obviously leaves fatty liver OR... my mind is playing nasty tricks on me and wondering all kinds of scary things :(

however scary it will soon be over and you will at least know what you are dealing with or not as the case may be, as it could well be nothing that you don't already know. At least you can then get on with addressing it. good luck.

thanks StepAway... I do try to control my health anxiety but I am even worse about DH than I am about myself... I can't tell him this of course because if he thinks I am worried he will probably worry. At the moment of course he's not worried!

if he is not worried then take that as a good sign, I am a great believer in instinct, for some reason I always know with my own health when its something for concern or just a minor niggle, perhaps he is the same, keep busy tonight.... is that a huge pile of ironing I see under the stairs? if not you can come and do mine Grin

emeraldgirl1 · 05/01/2012 16:19

ironing for hire... there are worse ways to manage a health panic!!! Grin

I also have HA and our instinct is that every minor niggle is the end of the world, trust in ourselves is best avoided.

Hope all goes well emeraldgirl1, the waiting is the worst bit for over active imaginationsSmile

Hi WhereTHeWildThingsAre - yes, I write as the idiot person who convinced myself several months ago that a black dot on my foot was the first sign of skin cancer. As the doctor pointed out, while gently scratching said dot off my foot, it was just something very sticky... Blush

Why this doesn't make me less anxious about tomorrow's scan, I don't know!!!

Emerald - I worked with a medical doctor who himself had very high liver enzymes - and had those for years. I remember him telling me about it (for some reason). I don't know anything else about the subject at all.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 05/01/2012 16:52

Grin at 'something very sticky' chin up emerald .... I also have other chores when the ironing is done

emeraldgirl1 · 05/01/2012 16:57

Hi Curtain - yes, I have heard about this thing of having 'high liver enzymes' for no particular reason... What I wish is that DH would just LOSE THE TUMMY FAT (I know it's easier said than done, but he really could try harder!!) and then maybe the fatty liver issue might improve and we would know the real situation with the liver enzymes... oh, well. Tomorrow will tell us more, hopefully.

I have a fatty liver too. I've been told to lose weight and reduce cholesterol. For the liver part, no-one seems too concerned. I was told to get a scan on one of my ducts that's a weird shape but I forgot and have now lost the paper.

I'd probably be more concerned if it was DH than me.

emeraldgirl1 · 05/01/2012 17:14

I love your name GiserableMitt. Yes this is exactly what DH was told 2 years ago - lose weight, especially off the tummy region. To be fair to him he has lost weight - the (very) few pounds he had elsewhere!! The tummy fat has barely shifted. I do know it's notoriously hard to shift but I am starting to beg him to try harder. He tries a BIT, if you know what I mean.
