To just not GET Twitter

WheresTheCat · 05/01/2012 14:02

OK, I am poorly atm and don't feel like doing anything Smile

So, I decided that I ought to sign up to Twitter. I hear about it all the time etc, but have no idea what it is.
So have signed up, found a few friends to follow - but what am I supposed to do on Twitter?

Very confused and feeling very very ancient and not getting this!

Ooops, there's a similar post in 'chat' - will nip over there. . .anyone else struggle with Twitter?

Oh, I was the same - now I just use it as an information feed.

Find your local council, local police, local newspaper etc and 'follow' them - everyday, you get updates about what's happening around you and it's really useful and informative information.

I never 'tweet'. Can't imagine anyone giving a flying toss what I'm doing right now or what I'm having for dinner! (Same with Facebook - waste of time and energy - nobody. cares!)Grin

Diane Abbott 'gets' Twitter. The racist bitch.

bettybat · 05/01/2012 14:34

I'm a social media/digital marketing consultant so can maybe shed some light!

The best analogy I've heard for the three big platforms (FB, Twitter, Linkedin) is:

Facebook is like a dinner party
Twitter is like a cocktail party
Linkedin is like a networking party

Mostly because LI is set up for professional networking/ thought leadership etc. Facebook is private behind a login and the set up allows for longer posting, linked conversation threads etc. Twitter is completely public - you can talk to anyone, anyone can talk to you. (Though now I think you can make your profile private to stop people following you.)

Even me, the so-called professional, struggled to get to grips with Twitter. But then the riots in Egypt happened a few years back, and saw how amazing it was a tool to get information out of a country where information and communication was locked down. I ended up Tweeting myself well into the early hours on behalf of my company during the London riots. My local Twitter person - someone in my area set up a XXX-location account to tweet stuff about our area - also provided valuable information on what was happening, how close trouble was etc. It's also awesome for other, less threatening real-time information - like train line feeds.

I reckon Twitter is set up better for businesses - BTB, commercial, small business, consultancy and self-employed people do very well to use it as a brand awareness tool. But I have a lot of friends who simply just delight in "talking" to celebrities - like, never before have us - lowly civilians - been able to actually talk to people in the public eye. I have other friends who use it like FB - except their conversations are ultra public, and I don't really get why they use it like that.

I've also had some great success publicly scolding companies who have had shocking customer services, and the results have always been good because companies simply can't afford to let stuff like that go unaddressed. Basically - the consumer has found its voice and its not afraid to use it! Even Fitness First crumbled and I've always had such problems with them.

Except - you're free to use it however the heck you like! That's kind of the beauty of it. It's not restrictive like FB. There's a gazillion add on tools like tweet extensions, image posting, etc. Mooch around, find your friends, or people you like in the public eye, or companies you like, see what everyone else does and find your way :)

Twitter is great for getting real time information.

Is Heathrow shut down in the snow storms.

Are the riots on our high st.

That sort of thing is great. I don't follow anyone, dh does with some people in his industry.

loosyloo · 05/01/2012 14:38

twitter takes a while to get the hang on, because its not for muppets like FB is

but once you are hooked, you are hooked

its great

WheresTheCat · 05/01/2012 14:39

Wow - thank you Betty
I am pottering on it now - just found my brother Smile

Facebook is my virtual social life and an opportunity to stay in touch with a lot of old friends (I don't really phone anyone, and am not always in the mood for long real-time conversations). Everyone knows me on FB and I don't really have to be careful with what I say.

Twitter is my virtual shouting and connecting to the world. I've found its all about who you follow, who you tag, and who you reply/retweet to. You do have to be careful though, I made a lighthearted comment about Masterchef giving me ideas for the wood pigeons in my garden and was retweeted to the leader of some politcial animal rights party in holland!

I'm not a massive fan of twitter, but if you follow everyone who interests you in general, plus the local services, you might read some interesting stuff, then unfollow as you carry on.

loosyloo · 05/01/2012 14:45

if you follow someone, say for discussion purposes its @thejeremyvine - if you put @thejeremyvine in the search box, you can see what others are saying to him. I follow quite a few people I have found like that who follow the same people as I do and have similar outlooks on life.

Our local police are on there and are absolutely hilarious - they tweet about the stuff they are being called to - like the thief with the sausages down his trousers in sainsburys LOL. They manage to engage with the local community really well

GiserableMitt · 05/01/2012 14:49

I don't get it either. I have an account but don't have a clue what to do with it.

what are the @ and # for?

aldiwhore · 05/01/2012 14:51

The @ is what loosyloo says, the # is to see anything related to what follows the #... try a few phrases, it can lead funny places. #wanttogotosleepnow etc., one common one is #ff... I think its a 'have a nice friday' slang or summit.

exexpat · 05/01/2012 14:52

The main point of twitter is not necessarily to follow people you know, but people/things/issues you are interested in - so I follow news sources, various journalists, writers, a few celebs (Stephen Fry and Caitlin Moran are virtually compulsory) and so on, as well as a few friends of mine.

You can just read what comes up, or reply/tweet to anyone you like, and you may get replies from interesting/famous people you don't know.

Having a look at trending topics can be fun sometimes, but often it just makes me despair for the average intelligence level on there.

GiserableMitt · 05/01/2012 14:54

Thanks for the pointers. I'm sitting here saying to myself, "Hmmmm.....what am I interested in? Who or what should I follow?" :)

GiserableMitt · 05/01/2012 14:55

And what's a retweet?

loosyloo · 05/01/2012 15:01

look at the list of trending topics down the side (mine is set to UK) and click on any that interest you

The main point of twitter is not necessarily to follow people you know, but people/things/issues you are interested in - so I follow news sources, various journalists, writers, a few celebs

agree with this - I follow the radio phone in presenters i listen to on Radio 5 and contribute to the programme like that - they always read tweets out - I follow a few journos, political people, comedians - I dont follow celebs as such. The more you follow, the more interesting you will find it. You can always unfollow if they turn out to be boring

if you like jokes try @thekeithchegwin, or @Queen_UK

loosyloo · 05/01/2012 15:02

a retweet is when you see a comment you agree with or like, or its funny etc and you basically repeat it so it shows up on your timeline. Or someone can do it for your tweets if you say something they like

bettybat · 05/01/2012 15:19

Although I don't really understand people who use it like FB - conversations between friends etc - I'm a big believer in there being no correct way to use it. It's entirely powered by user generated content - there's very little in the way of techy, functional stuff to it. The only thing Twitter relies upon is people using it. How people use it is entirely up to them!

Trending topics are hilarious - especially trying to figure out why a particular person/thing is trending at that moment!

The first icky thing I've seen on it is my (gross) BIL, who tweeted about some "hot" Sky Sports presenter leaving a TV show, and how how she was etc - and including her in the actual tweet. It grossed me out a little. Like - fair do's, there's loads of hot people on TV. But it seems to cross boundaries in a very unpleasant way to actually say that to that person, who is a total stranger!

hairypotter · 05/01/2012 15:31

You have all inspired me to sign up. -- I don't like to think

hairypotter · 05/01/2012 15:34

bugger! I dont like to think I'm missing out on anything. I'm searching for people to follow but I'm not sure how to find the bit to change it go uk? Doesn't seem to be around, can anyone enlighten me please? Thanks

loosyloo · 06/01/2012 15:38
