Waybuloo versus Abney and Teal

Jonny69 · 05/01/2012 13:35

To feel that the all saucer eyed homunculi and nara bugs of Waybuloo have less warmth and worth than even the smallest poc poc of Abney and Teal ?
The choice is between a saccharin infused computer generated phantasmagoria OR "living in the park on an island". God I love islands! Unfortunately my small girl likes both.....

we've just asked DD (4.7yrs) what's the difference between Waybaloo and Abney & Teal

shes says Waybaloo is for babies and is rubbish, A & T is lovely and has pot-pots

Grin
MardyBra · 05/01/2012 18:34

Nope. Still no idea.

TeWihara · 05/01/2012 18:38

DD loves both.

Waybuloo gets her active (she does actually demand I do all the yogo etc with her - was tricky at 9mths PG)

Abney & Teal has her undivided attention and much love from us both.

tethersend · 05/01/2012 18:42

RIGHT- the eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed that The Bedtime Hour is changing from Monday (and will now include the Stepford-esque Driver Dan's story train). This usually means that all other programmes change too.

Does this mean that there will be no Abney and Teal?

Because I'm not sure my parenting skills are up to doing the graveyard shift without it. Please, somebody reassure me?

tooearlymustdache · 05/01/2012 18:48

tethers, my dear Wink

Abney & Teal is on at 5.45...the bedtime hour is between 6-7pm

I hate Driver Dan - the smug bastard.

They wouldn't cancel Abney and Teal. It hasn't built enough of a following to flog overpriced tat yet.

What was the point of a new series of the gardening man - in January? Let's inspire kids to.....oh, wait. They'll have to wait three months to do anything in the garden. Never mind, we all know how good pre-school children are at waiting.

tethersend · 05/01/2012 18:54

tooearly, darling- read again; "This usually means that all other programmes change too." I've been here before- I remember the trauma!Grin

When they announce that The Bedtime Hour will change, you find the rest of the schedules have been annihilated too.

If you can tell me that Abney and Teal will be on at 5.45 from Monday, i will love you forever. If not...

tethersend · 05/01/2012 18:55

Sue, I hope you're right and capitalism triumphs. It's our only hope.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 05/01/2012 19:01

Abney and Teal rules here. DS1 has always loathed Wayballoo, but now DS2 shows a marked preference for it. Hmm I think the deliberate wannabe-Postgateness of Abney and Teal could get on my tits in another few months, but at the moment, it's fandabbydozy and we both love it! Shelly, I'd never overthought about it before, but of course that's what's going on - they are abandoned toys lost at the park! Sad

...what does that make the Poc Pocs then?

But is anyone else reminded of Alan Bennet when they watch Abney? Grin

tooearlymustdache · 05/01/2012 19:01

they wouldn't dare!

and they aren't

tooearlymustdache · 05/01/2012 19:02

although the 20/26 in brackets after A&T is rather worrying

Munx · 05/01/2012 19:03

I have just checked and yes Abney and Teal is still on at 5.45

I really really wish they wouldn't muck about with the bedtime hour, despite how I feel about waybuloo DD loves it, and now it will be on for ten mins then Driver Dan for ten mins? How the hell does that work?! Must be a truncated version like the weird Zingzillas they have on at the moment.

In my defence DD is very poorly ATM and we seem to be watching a bit more than usual......Grin

CailinDana · 05/01/2012 19:06

I loathe Abney and Teal beyond all reasoning. I can't really say why. DS doesn't like it either. Waybuloo is fine, weird with badly dubbed children and silly talk but still not as bad as A and T.

MardyBra, why comment if you're not familiar with the topic?

bigkidsdidit · 05/01/2012 19:08

I hadn't thought about A and T - of course they're toys lost in the park! How sad. Although they do have a jolly time.

I'm convinced the island is the nature reserve off the bank of he Thames between Hammersmith and Chiswick

tethersend · 05/01/2012 19:11

OH GOD THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

LanceCorporalBoiledEgg · 05/01/2012 19:12

YANBU

Or should that be YAN-BUuulloooooooooooooooooo!

BleurghUna · 05/01/2012 20:05

Reshape You have hit the nail on the head! So it's not just me that thinks it's like the Clangers.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 05/01/2012 20:18

Nope, it's very definitely intended to be Postgatey. I think someone sat down and thought 'we need a Classic children's tv programme, one like the ones we used to have when I were a lad' and then identified what made Oliver Postgate's programmes so special.

Whimsical characters: tick
Avuncular narration: tick
surreal plotlines: tick
Folky music played on real instruments: tick
quirky conversation with long words: tick
totally random fetishisation of odd foodstuff: tick (porridge in A&T, green soup and blue string pudding in The Clangers)

I mean, good god! they're mad for porridge in Abney and Teal! It even has its own theme music. The porridge, I mean. What do they put in it, ffs? Hmm

fivegomadindorset · 05/01/2012 20:20

DS has never been into Wyabuloo but loves A&T

Chubfuddler · 05/01/2012 20:22

I hate waybaloo with a passion. Abbey and teal is classic kids' tv in the making.

stubbornstains · 05/01/2012 20:38

Myself, I am convinced it's either the Serpentine or one of the islands in the lake in St. James' Park.

PaddingtonsMarmalade · 05/01/2012 20:57

I hate Waybuloo and I loathe De-Li and whassername (the purple one) with all their pointless girlish simperings and trit-trottings about. Can't stand it. Even DD says oh look it's flippin' Waybuloo on AGAIN (I'm very much not thinking flippin' when I'm saying it).

On the other hand A&T is bloody excellent and I am waiting for the toys which are out in July. Not for DD, oh no, but for me.

Chubfuddler · 05/01/2012 21:02

Toys? Teal had better be a v lovely raggy doll.

Katy1368 · 05/01/2012 21:07

I hate Waybuloo but DD loves it and doing the yoga, she does look damn cute when she does it!

Love love love Abney and Teal and so doesshe, in fact she shouts to tell me when it's on. I'm personally convinced it's based in Haggerston park next to Hackney city farm, because there was some mention that they live on a city farm at the beginning I think. Sure I recognize some of the tower blocks and the busy road (Hackney Road) in the background too!

PaddingtonsMarmalade · 05/01/2012 21:10

Couldn't agree more Chubfuddler - Teal most definitely better be a v lovely raggy doll indeed and then I will have one - hurrah. There aren't any images of the toys out yet (that I can find). I should really start engaging with real life more Wink - this is what 2 small DCs does for you I find though.
