www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-2081666/Driving-licence-trap-1-6m-drivers-risk-hefty-fine-renewing-photograph-20-cost.html

it cost alot to get a driving licence in the first place, then tax moting and insurances, wear and tear ect....why should be pay another thing on top DONT THEY GET ENOUGH FROM PETROL PRICES

What's the problem? Photos licences have a validity of 10 years, so £2 a year. Is that seriously too much to pay? How much is that in your annual car budget? What has the price of petrol got to do with paying for having a valid driving licence?

KittyFane · 04/01/2012 18:48

It was a pain changing for us, we'd lost the paper ones and they needed us to post birth certs. or passports off to them +£.
£20 is £20, they should probably change them for free if they want everyone to comply.

MrsMellowDrummer · 04/01/2012 18:48

It actually costs more than that when you think about it - you have to pay to get the photo's taken. That's at least £4. And if (like me), they decide your photo isn't good enough (mine apparently had a completely invisible scratch on it), then you have to get another set done and send that off too.

EdithWeston · 04/01/2012 18:49

Given that before the photocard was introduced, it was free, then yes it does seem like a huge increase. Especially as failure to renew on time is backed by a £1000 fine, and no reminders are issued.

How many on this thread know off-hand when theirs is due for renewal?

MrsMellowDrummer · 04/01/2012 18:49

photos (sorry!)

KittyFane · 04/01/2012 18:49

As we'd lost ours, we had to get them done regardless of deadline.

londonmackem · 04/01/2012 18:51

Do you have to have one? I still have my paper one from a long time ago.

scurryfunge · 04/01/2012 18:53

You would have to have a seriously bored police officer to stick you on for it though.

natation · 04/01/2012 18:54

It's written on the driving licence when it must be renewed I think. Sorry I have a Belgian licence now so my UK licence is with DVLA. I exchanged it a few weeks before the expiry date written on the licence.

Sorry but there are some things people have to take as THEIR responsibility, such as renewing their passports or driving licences if they wish for them to remain valid. It's really not up to nanny state to remind you of their validity.

EdithWeston · 04/01/2012 18:54

londonmackem: you need to get a photo one when you acquire a first licence, or change details (move house, change name, add classes of vehicles etc).

If you have done none of those things since the photo version was rolled out, you can continue with old paper only (indefinitely, as things stand).

EdithWeston · 04/01/2012 18:55

nataion: you're not fined if you fail to renew your passport though, are you? And you do get reminders for things like TV licences, where the system is backed by fines.

McHappyPants2012 · 04/01/2012 18:55

i don't know when mine is due, will have to look on my photocard.

it is the princable of having to pay £20 every 10 years, when i passed my test 8 years ago ( looked on my licence) i wasn't given a choice between photo or paper....but now i got to pay to update my photo every 10 years

OP posts:
wonkylegs · 04/01/2012 18:55

It's particularly stupid for me as according to them & the passport office my face & hair is too pale so they will only accept a picture that doesn't actually look like me so that I am 'machine readable' Hmm
So I guess it's going to cost me £20 to still not look like me

whackamole · 04/01/2012 18:59

Mine is due in 9 and a half years as I got mine renewed last year. I was very fastidious about doing it even though I don't have a car right now.

Did annoy me as the photos were £5, licence renewal was £20, I just didn't want to be declined for a mortgage as it was out of date!

Methe · 04/01/2012 19:00

Mine expired last February.

I really must sort it out but tbh I have better things to spend £20 on, like heating and food!

laughinggnome · 04/01/2012 19:00

I got a reminder in the post just before Christmas

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/01/2012 19:01

Mine's due this year, I didn't realise they don't remind you though. If your actual licence expires they do. It is a lot easier to inadvertently carry on driving than it is to try and travel abroad without your passport though.

natation · 04/01/2012 19:06

Wonklegs, the photo on a passport must have a darker / different colour background for those with very light skin and hair, so that when the photo is encrypted into the hidden "chip" it is easy to see the contours of your head and your head doesn't fade into the background. My hubby fell foul of the guidance for photos he didn't bother to read - he had a white shirt against a white background and looked like he almost didn't have a body, resulting in the photo being rejected, it was quite ironic, given hubby's job!!!! I was in fits when I saw the rejection letter, he couldn't see the funny side.

Edith, no you're not fined for failing to renew your passport, just met many many people who have not been able to travel because they didn't renew their passports, the excuse given is often "no-one told me my passport had run out". Sometimes it's very hard when people genuinely don't look at find on travelling they cannot travel. But ultimately, it's the individual's responsibility and not the state's responsibility.

If a driving licence is just out of date, I think you might find many Police Officers will make a pragmatic judgement on whether to fine or not, whereas if a licence is more than a few months out of date, then I don't think there would be so much discretion.

I still say £20 is really not too much to renew a driving licence.

natation · 04/01/2012 19:09

Well you cannot go abroad with an expired passport (theory, in practice it depends on which route you take to which country). You cannot get back into the UK an expired passport if travelling through certain ports either and risk arrest by trying to do so.

GypsyMoth · 04/01/2012 19:10

I just got a reminder too!!

So they do send them out.

laughinggnome · 04/01/2012 19:10

I do wish it didn`t have two parts to it though - I seem to be incapable of finding both parts when I need them - I have paid to have my address changed 3 times now because I couldn't find both parts on any of the 3 occasions we have moved house in the past 10 years.

discrete · 04/01/2012 19:11

but you don't have to renew it if you don't drive, do you?

so it is like a passport in that way.

TeaandHobnobs · 04/01/2012 19:12

I had to renew the photo on my provisional licence Blush

If that wasn't a kick up the backside for getting on with passing my test...

lilackaty · 04/01/2012 19:13

Mine is due to be updated in March; I had no idea so thank you for this thread. And although I don't really mind paying for the renewal, I will be annoyed about the cost of the photos.

pinkhebe · 04/01/2012 19:14

We had reminders just before xmas to get it done, that's £40 just after xmas + £10 for 2 lots of photos. It is a lot of money. We did it today, dh's runs out yesterday Blush
