Went to Pizza hut yesterday with husband and son 5, ordered 2 pizzas and was able to have free salad as ordered 2 pizzas. When pizzas came i was given 2 plates and 2 plates for salad bar. I asked for another plate for my son as he would be sharing with husband and I as he doesnt eat a lot and the girl went quiet as if she was about to say i should have ordered a kids meal but didnt. Is it unreasonable for a child to share as he really only eats a bit and would not be worth buying a kids meal?
I have since been on facebook and seen someone comment that pizza hut dont do free kids meals anymore so they wont be going, i thought everyone shared with the kids and thats the norm or aibu

I would just order a large one for myself and share with dd more than enough I say.

BrianButterfield · 04/01/2012 17:24

festi - you don't order extra salad bowls now, every main meal gets free unlimited salad. So OP WBU if she wanted a plate for the salad, but I assumed she wanted to share the pizza, which is fine in my book.

I think the 'free kids' meals' thing has muddied the waters somewhat - when you think about it, by not using that deal, the OP has actually got less food for the same amount of money - so why should that get raised eyebrows from waiting staff?

pigletmania · 04/01/2012 17:28

The op had ordered 2 pizzas not buffet so should be able to share them, I have ordered a large pizza with dh and shared it with him in PH.

JjandtheBean · 04/01/2012 17:39

YANBU

Our pizza huts never allowed me to buy kids meals for buffet, they always say let them share yours. They're 3 and 4. I'd buy a salad bowl and share with dp so why not a child?

JambalayaCodfishPie · 04/01/2012 17:44

pizza hut staff are not the sharpest pencils in the tin though

Really? You've met every single one?

Yes, I worked there when I was younger!! Grin

ChunkyPickle · 04/01/2012 17:47

I would say that it would have been nice of them to let you give some salad to your 5 year-old, but not compulsory.

This is why I like my local Harvester (my, how my standards have dropped since having a kid) because they're super friendly, and have no problem with us skipping the kids meal and just giving ours a bowl from the salad bar (at no extra charge)

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 04/01/2012 17:50

Mandy2003 because it would be very difficult to prove unless someone accompanied you to the buffet every time wouldn't it? So even though you know you might eat two pieces the staff can't know that. In that case a buffet wouldn't be the correct choice of meal and you'd order a personal pan pizza i'd have thought.

And sadly for every honest request the staff have usually seen a fair share of pisstakes. And they are on minimum wage and don't need grief. You wouldn't believe the mickey and cheek from customers. I remember the ice cream factory being installed in my branch and people filling up bloody carrier bags with smarties when they thought no one was looking!

However if you were a regular in my local restaurant and came in a few times then i'd probably try and accommodate your request.

Thankfully I left the company 20 years ago! But it gave me the best anecdotes lol!

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 04/01/2012 17:52

Thank you Jambalaya it's more to do with their shocking salaries than their intelligence.

I have 13 o levels, 4 a levels and a degree, but couldn't be asked with all the grief most of the time! Most young people working there are putting themselves through Uni or on a graduate training scheme.

soandsosmummy · 04/01/2012 18:22

We must be so lucky with the pizza hut we go to. There are two in the city centre and one is appalling and after the "service" we got last time I'd never o back - basically we kept trying to order for 20 minutes in a nearly empty resturant and finally gave up and left. The previous time the buffet was cold and nearly empty they only replenished when DP insisted that two slices of garlic bread and 3 tomatos was not sufficient.

The other though is fantastic. The staff can't do enough for you. The management are always floating about being friendly. The pizza buffet has been replaced by a Pizza Parade where they keep bringing different types of pizzas to your table and letting you take as many slices as you like. They still have the salad buffet though. They actually ask if you want your drink refilled. I always feel compelled to tip because the service is really good.

Seona1973 · 04/01/2012 19:18

but you got the plate so what is the issue? We were told about the free kids meals being available by voucher when we went the other day but they did tell us we could get it sent to our phone so thats what we did.

festi · 04/01/2012 19:20

thanks brian, then in that case OP YANBU. go to pizza express next time, I find them far more child friendly anyway.

BrianButterfield · 04/01/2012 20:41

I am entranced by the idea of the Pizza Parade. Although DH says elbowing people out of the way is half the fun of the buffet Hmm

Iwantababynow · 04/01/2012 21:39

I worked for pizza hut and it is not the waitressesfault...

we were always taught that children (unless a baby) were not alowed to share with thier parents if the food/drink they ordered was unlimited.

eg, unlimited cola, unlimited salad, unlimited pizza and pasta buffet, ice cream factory.

It may sound harsh but you dont know how much money the company looses every year.

Ive seen parents come in with 5 kids and try to pay for two buffets and 2 unlimited drinks, then they let there children "taste"

but... dont blame the staff they are told to say no or charge extra if you share, the restraunts where they dont do this are being "nice" but not following the rules.

as someone else stated most working in pizza hut are trying to get there degree they cant aford to just ignore when customers take what they(the staff) have been told are not allowed to take. they may get fired for not following rules.

I hope you enjoy your next visit

BrianButterfield · 04/01/2012 22:05

But they paid for two pizzas, though. They all come with salad anyway so they couldn't have not ordered something unlimited, surely?

makachu · 05/01/2012 00:34

Um, I work for Pizza Hut, I have a degree, it was my job to see me through uni, and I work very hard for not very much money. Like any workplace that doesn't pay very well there are some people working from the company who aren't terribly bright, but It is a gross generalisation to say that Pizza Hut staff tend not to be "the sharpest pencil in the tin."

The branch I work at allows sharing to a degree, I wouldn't allow 15 people to share one salad bowl and a small pizza or one refillable drink. Some people really try it on! We don't charge babies and toddlers to eat from the buffet though, but that is at our own discretion and depends on how nice the customers are! Obviously if there was say, one adult, 3 toddlers we would charge, but maybe for one child buffet instead of 3.

For the diabetic wanting to only pay for a kids buffet, you must be having a laugh! If you can't eat more than two slices of pizza at a time, what are you doing at a buffet? order something that suits you from the menu! You may not like the company, I don't like it much either but we have to make money or we do not get the hours we need to staff the restaurant properly and it becomes a viscous cycle of losing money through making too many concessions and unhappy, very tired staff having to serve more customers than they can physically cope with. So many people come in trying to fleece as much as possible out of our restaurant without thinking about the effect it has on our livelihood, there can't be a separate rule just for one customer.

To the OP, sharing is definitely expected and I very much doubt that the waitress will have gone quiet because you asked for an extra plate. It is not unusual for two adults to share a regular sized pizza in ANY of the stores in the whole of the UK, no one would raise an eyebrow at sharing a regular pizza and some salad with a child. If you wanted to share an adult refillable drink it might have been a different matter though. If she didn't even say anything about it there could be a hundred other reasons for her to be a little bit quiet, maybe she was embarrassed that she didn't notice your son was there? Maybe she was having a hard day or had forgotten something or was going to suggest something then decided it was actually a bad idea so didn't? You wouldn't be unreasonable if she had actually refused you a plate to share the food with, but she didn't! You're over thinking things, next time you don't need to try and justify sharing to the staff, just relax!

Mandy2003 · 05/01/2012 11:56

Makachu - everything on the menu was too large for me to manage. All I wanted was one slice of pizza, a couple of spoonfuls of pasta salad and some green salad. I could not see that offered on the menu but I could have chosen that from the buffet and been well within a child's portion IMO.

Yulewithadragontattoo · 05/01/2012 12:23

Pizza hut pizza are designed to be shared. It's different to, say, Pizza Express where one pizza is one portion and they do a smaller one for kids. I could understand them not being too keen to give your child some of your portion then if they were old enough to order a kids portion.

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 05/01/2012 12:40

Yanbu

But I love our local ph.

Kids eat free without a code when you have the buffet.

And if you go in happy our you get an individual pizza, a side , salad and a drink for £6.

This is on mon to fri from 3 til 5

But I've asked for extra plate plenty of times in other places. Never had a problem

pigletmania · 05/01/2012 12:52

iwantababy op was not doing the unlimited buffet she ordered 2 pizzas which are designed to be shared.

coolrider1 · 05/01/2012 12:55

yanbu the lady dosent get it if you have kids you do this most of the time especially if you have a picker with you.

lljkk · 05/01/2012 13:10

All this fuss over a plate! Could you son not just use a serviette to eat his pizza with? And then forgotten about the whole thing?

I once did the opposite, 3 DC and DH each ordered a pizza, I ordered only a drink & just had one of their free salads (DC had no salad), and DC4 just ate crusts off the others.

Seona1973 · 05/01/2012 13:48

the waitress gave her a plate and didnt complain or say a word about it - all this over the girl going quiet (fuss over nothing!).
