For wanting dd to sleep on the top bunk

prettymum · 04/01/2012 11:10

Dd(7) and ds(5) share a bedroom at the moment, and we have just bought them a bunk bed so they can have more space to play.
DD wants the top and ds wants the bottom, but according to dp, because dd is a girl she should sleep at the bottom and ds at top! Now isn't that a very sexist view, he has no other explanation other then the sex factor.

Really fuming at this as dd is more responsible and would be better at the top and she loves her privacy whereas ds loves jumping around and it would be better for him at night when he has to go toilet.
But dp doesn't take any of this into account, in his eyes girls should be at the bottom boys at top!!! Angry

Do you think IABU?

The most sensible goes in the top bunk!
At 5 and 7 that's almost certainly the older.

QuintessentiallyShallow · 04/01/2012 12:09

Oldest goes on top.

What would your dh do if you had two sons?

Would they share the top bunk?

Jennyrosity · 04/01/2012 12:11

That's quite frankly one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.

ShowOfHands · 04/01/2012 12:15

I've attempted to slip a few notches down the food chain in order to understand his logic and I'm still not getting it. Unless he can find some research suggesting that a penis rests better at altitude, I'm marking this down in my 'what a load of old bollocks' jotter.

KatAndKit · 04/01/2012 12:17

If he thinks the top bunk is a hazard, he shouldn't be putting either of his children at risk, regardless of boy or girl.

However, as everyone else has said, the logical solution is eldest on top if one is under 6 and the other over. If they are both 7 or over then the kids preference can be taken into account, or who is most sensible, or whatever. But a five year old should definitely be sleeping on the bottom bunk.

Blatherskite · 04/01/2012 12:24

What Jennyrosity said.

then what Kayano said.

SkinnyWhiteBoy · 04/01/2012 12:51

It's a bizarre and incomprehensible thing for him to have said. Oldest child should go on top bunk as they have better coordination, plus that this is the way round that the ids want to be. Agree with comments that he's being sexist. You should point out to him that he is.
Good luck.

FredFredGeorge · 04/01/2012 13:01

DP goes on the top. The rest of you sleep together.

Catsu · 04/01/2012 13:09

So DD is the oldest and most people agree the oldest goes on the top bunk
PLUS DD wants the top bunk and DS wants the bottom bunk

But DH wants it the other way round because girls arent allowed to go on a top bunk - I have never heard such a ridiculous thing!! Surely he is taking the piss?

prettymum · 04/01/2012 13:27

Thank you for proving me right ladies, have explained this all to him, got the manual out, read out the bit about top bunk being suitable for only 6yrs+ and nowhere in it did it mention that due to risks to girls only boys should sleep on the top.

He has tried to get a bit defensive but I have told him straight that I will not listen to him when he makes statements like that and I am not having my children taught that sort of attitude.

I take it DH always goes on top OP? :o

He is being a dick btw...

blackeyedsanta · 04/01/2012 13:59

he would get on well with the childens dad. he thought that he should have the big car because he is a man. nevermind that i have pushchairs and shopping and nappy bags and school bag to fit inthe boot. compared to a briefcase.

sexist idiots both.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 04/01/2012 13:59

Bloody hell, I thought you were a wind up merchant with your OP - but you are actually serious aren't you? Fecking hell. This surely can't be the first time he's said something so entirely ridiculous like this?? Come on, share some other corkers!

TroublesomeEx · 04/01/2012 14:05

I thought so too ChippingIn!

Your DH reminds me of my BIL, OP.

We had his eldest to stop the night when he was 6. We gave him a glass of milk at bedtime and he refused and seemed quite offended. When we gave BIL the sleepover feedback at this he laughed and said, "Milk? He doesn't drink milk. He's a boy!"

Oh yeah, cos boys don't grow nor nuffink. Hmm

Hullygully · 04/01/2012 14:08

kill him

Chandon · 04/01/2012 14:09

haha.

I slept in top bunk, my youngest brother in the bottom one.

tethersend · 04/01/2012 14:11

I think you should get bunk beds for you and him as well.

TheAvocadoOfWisdom · 04/01/2012 14:15
Biscuit
Blatherskite · 04/01/2012 14:32

My brother is the youngest of the family with 3 older sisters. He never got the top bunk.

He also played Rubgy semi professionally so I don't think the low altitude affected his testosterone.

mumeeee · 04/01/2012 17:09

YANBA but your DH is BVU. We have
3 DD's and 2 of them used to sleep on bunk beds. The eldest had the top bunk. Also as other posters have said the top bunk is not recommended for under 6's.

RabidEchidna · 04/01/2012 17:15

Oldest on top bunk.... end of

IloveJudgeJudy · 04/01/2012 17:23

Oldest goes on top. Under 6s should not go on top bunks. Your DH IBU.
