WIBU to eat this rice or should I just throw it away? Boring, I know, but a genuine question! Thanks.

I have some left over boiled rice in the fridge from dinner the night before last.

I had some with the leftover curry yesterday at lunchtime and reheated it thoroughly. All was fine.

Would I Be Unreasonable to do the same again today or am I likely to become horribly ill? Have no qualms about the lentil curry, just the rice.

I've only ever had food poisoning once and it was after being fed re-heated white boiled rice at someone else's house. So I'm always uber wary of it but need to know if it's ok really.

Thanks and sorry it's so boring! I get really excited when I see a new AIBU thread and am then really disappointed when it's this dull Xmas Grin

I have had food poisoning several times. It has always involved rice (with the exception of a dinner from Angus Steak House on Oxford Street, what was I thinking, eating there.) whether in a Chinese restaurant in Nice, or from a Veg Biryani in India. Oh, and I got a dodgy tummy once from a mac D in Egypt. Funny that, as I has eaten local food all the time, and was well until I succumbed to a big mac.

had eaten, not has eaten.

Boiling water doesn't kill toxins though so I wouldn't do the rinsing thing.

I always am extra careful with rice, as ds12 had poisoning from some sushi I had in my bag for about 4 hours. We bought it from wilkinsons, it was on its last day so reduced, then went out on the train and took it with us to eat.

On the way home there was a bit left and ds was hungry so I gave it to him. He was really sick the next day Sad

I don't trust rice unless it is freshly cooked.

I do wonder though if wilkos really leave their fridges on all night. That was probably why it was bad.

I don't buy food from them any more.

Going to go against most of you cautious people here!
We eat a lot of rice, any leftovers will be refridgerated for up to 48 hours and reheated by either steaming or microwaving covered with wet kitchen roll.
Any remaining rice beyond that time is usually frozen, after which it would be defrosted and reheated by steaming.
We have never had dodgy tummies from years of these practices, nor have any of our many dinner guests.

Best to err on the side of caution with rice.

Rice is probably the only foodstuff I'm overly cautious about. I've a pretty sharp sense of smell, so with many other foods, the smell of something on the turn gives it away. Hadn't realised you could get food poisoning from rice until I was working for an Environmental Health department which was dealing with a case of food poisoning caused by a rice salad, which made about 50 people ill.

If you're cooking rice for a salad or fried rice, you're more likely to be careful about how it's cooled and stored. If it's been cooked to have with a hot meal, you're probably not going to dealing with the storage of leftovers straightaway.

As you say, it's only a small amount of rice, so why not cook some fresh?

lottiegb · 05/01/2012 10:14

Oh good, Chandon has explained it. With rice it's nothing to do with how well yuo re-heat it, everything to do with how long it was given to cool down.

TroublesomeEx · 05/01/2012 10:26

Well after posting on here yesterday that I would eat it, and then that I wouldn't.....

I ate it!

And I'm still here.

Thanks for the advice. It was good to have some of the facts spelt out. I knew there was an issue around it, but not exactly what it was.
