Refunds on Gift Receipts

I received 2 gifts bought for me at BHS. They didnt suit so I took them back to BHS Oxford St. London with the gift receipt, which the present-giver was OK about - that is why she got a gift receipt. I didnt want to get anything else there, but was told that I couldnt have a refund but could only have a gift voucher to be spent in store. My experience in the past is that e.g. John Lewis and clothing shops do refund without this palaver and that is why I go back there. Ive been on line and this doesnt seem to accord with BHS policy, as I read it. Ive sent a contact form to the company. Am I wrong about this?

I took a scarf back to John lewis and got gift vouchers - result as far as I am concerned. At least I will buy something nice, not just waste the cash.

*exchange.

I took a faulty item back to John Lewis a couple of days ago with a gift receipt. They didn't have a replacement so gave me gift vouchers. Almost certainly the gift giver had paid on a debit/credit card.

I try to buy things which might need to be returned with cash as I think it might then lead to a cash refund.

Everywhere I've gone have signs up saying only credits given for gift receipts.

Mbear · 03/01/2012 23:19

It does address the gift receipt issue as what you have quoted states that the debit/credit card is needed for any refund.

I'm not quite sure why you don't seem to be getting this. Ask the friend to find the original receipt and return the item (as is allowed) and then they can get you something else.

They are not obliged to give you more than a gift receipt.

Gift receipts don't include method of payment, so nowhere will give a cash refund with one.

If a refund is given, it must be given via the method by which the item was bought- so the exact card which was used to purchase something must be produced by the cardholder for a refund, something bought by cash would get a refund in cash.
A previous goodwill exchange, if a shop has done that for you without a receipt, but the second item is more expensive and the difference was paid by cash and then a refund is wanted at a later date; will have the value of cash refunded with the balance on a giftcard/credit note.

It sounds like you do this an awful lot. Why not ask everyone for cash next time, and cut out the middle man? Hmm. You'd be off my Christmas list by now.

I thought that a gift receipt would usually give you a credit note/voucher if you return non-faulty items, I wouldn't expect cash.

I had a problem returning something to Monsoon this week (present for DD that didn't fit), they said that with a gift receipt they will only allow exchanges.
I asked to see the manager, and with my youngest screaming her head off in the buggy, the manager agreed that now wasn't the best time for me to spend time looking for something to exchange and she let me have a credit voucher.

I was a bit surprised that they wouldn't give a credit voucher as a matter of routine.
