To ask if I can prevent colic though my diet during pregnancy and stress avoidance

Just found out I´m pregnant with second baby. Very excited. DS 1 is now 2 and was extremely colicky for first 4 months. Basically he cried all the time that he wasn´t feeding or sleeping and he slept badly, waking for feeds every two hours. I think of the first year as the dark days even though ds is lovely, very funny and affectionate and I enjoy being a mum. Anyway, I´m wondering if I can prevent the colic second time around by eating a better diet during pregnancy, specifically cutting down on sugar and having no caffeine or alcohol at all. Anybody ever tried this?

I reckon stress during pregnancy could also have affected ds. I was doing a temporary teaching job that I hated and struggling with classroom management in later stages of pregnancy. I got upset a lot. Now I´m self employed and work with my husband part time, which brings its own stresses, but I potentially have more control over the stress factors. I´d be interested to know if anyone thinks there´s a link between stress during pregnancy and colic.

I was ridiculously relaxed through my pregnancy with DD.

She had colic.

I think it's down the luck of the draw, and down to the baby rather than maternal factors, sorry.

In short, no. Sorry.

tbh if a baby is going to get colic they will Im not sure there is anything you can do to prevent it , your new baby might not be as colicky , dd2 wasnt , all babies are different , AND i was quite ill and stressy during both ,

I have read that breast feeding helps. Also, if you breastfeed, you can eliminate certain foods which are considered gassy like cabbage, brocoli etc.

Hmmm I think maybe ds was missing the womb. He is so into cuddles and affection that he would be bound to miss that security. But if colic can also be caused by underdeveloped digestive system, surely I can do something about that aspect of things through my diet.

I did breastfeed ds, but it only seemed to help when he was actually on the breast!

I think you are probaby better asking your midwife really i always thought colick was wind trapped ,

Flisspaps · 03/01/2012 16:43

The only thing that can help a baby's digestive system develop is time. That's why the advice isn't to wean until 6 months - because the digestive system isn't developed sufficiently. If the mother's diet during pregnancy had an impact on the development of the baby's digestive system then that would be advised during pregnancy and would affect when the baby could be weaned IYSWIM?

Colic can be caused by one of many things, in fact, it is basically an umbrella term for 'unexplained crying in a small baby' - it might just be down to having to adjust to what is effectively a whole new world, and no amount of changing your diet will make a jot of difference to that, sorry.

Phew, I'm glad noone said yes to that, I'm 26+5 with DS2 atm and I've not eaten very well at all this pregnancy!! Grin

I don't consume any form of sugar or caffeine, preg or not, and my poor Ds had terrible colic and now at 7months, really suffers with trapped wind and reflux. Sorry. I think it's just the luck of the draw, sadly.

i thought 'colic' was overstimulation?

flamegirl77 · 03/01/2012 20:23

A locus told me with great confidence 'colic is stomach cramps'. My HV was Confused. I was of the opinion that we don't really know what it is or what causes it. OP it won't hurt to try these things but be warned it might not make any difference. Of course your baby could be perfectly happy and placid.
