To get rid of these masks because I think they're bad luck?

MIL sent a box full of little presents for the DDs and amongst them are some peacock feather masks....I was brought up to believe you dont have them in the house...bad luck....I was brought up in an area where there were loads of superstitions and just can't shake some of them off!

I haven't said anything to DH...they arrived (in a wrapped box) a couple of days before Chrstmas and since then DH has broken his hip and DD2 has had a horrible virus....I know I am probably being silly....but would you keep them?

Would you be feeling odd about them or not?

But what else came in the box of presents? Could it be that it is something else that is bringing the 'bad luck'?

BandOMothers · 03/01/2012 11:20

flame all due respect but the DDs are 3 and 7 and don't hve the means to procure extra storage....my house, my rules mate.

meth it was just stickers and jewelry and little games..

YANBU to get rid of presents you don't like, I always do! But YABU to connect the events, well not really unreasonable, but IMO those kinds of negative superstitions can be a little unhealthy

You're being ridiculous. How can an inanimate object like a bloody feather bring bad luck? And if it's true it's a miracle that peafowl haven't gone the way of the Dodo, because being covered in the things they must be really fucked.

Get rid of them if you want, but know that it's superstitious nonsense.

You know in your heart of heart that you are behaving irrationally. However, that doesn't remove the compulsion to believe that every stubbed toe, paper cut, broken glass or family argument is due to the arrival of the masks.

You have a choice - either be rational, keep them and admire them for their beauty and remind yourself that you are being stupid for linking inanimate objects to bad luck. Or you can give in to the fear and send them away to a charity shop.

YABU. The masks don't bring bad luck and Peacock feathers are lovely. We've had some in our house for years and haven't had bad luck.

Jux · 03/01/2012 12:55

Oooooh, stickers. Now, they're really bad luck, it's their fault. Your dh got a great job because he's a great chap and the peacock feathers are innocent. Not so the stickers.... Grin

If you don't like them, get rid of them.
I'm not superstitious but asked a house mate to move a devils head mask to somewhere I couldn't see it, I also binned a picture that belonged to my Mum as it gave us both the heebies! And I don't believe in bad luck or anything, but I just did not like these objects.

HedgeHop · 03/01/2012 13:02

Punch them to the ground.

pranma · 03/01/2012 13:23

I threw out an 'Encyclopedia of witchcraft and demonology' that was in our house!

BandOMothers · 03/01/2012 14:17

I am taking them to the charity shop tomorrow...bet they'll refuse them...old dears you see...they'll shriek "Get those out of here now!!!"

I'm irrational too - get rid of them. I couldn't be comfortable with them in the house.
