no, you are very sensible!

ViviPru · 02/01/2012 19:16

I'd try and find a way of finding out if the gr8 (sic Confused) niece will sell the derelict house. Buy it massively under value, team of builders in for a month and hey presto, fancy pants renovated house with no problem property next door.

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 02/01/2012 19:17

No! If you don't want to live there, then for the love of all you hold dear, don't do it. (Can you tell I have backstory? Grin I HATE our house with a passion, and if it wasn't a semi would have set it alight and danced round it roasting taties years ago. I have beautiful dreams in which I come round the corner of the street and all that is left is a crater (while we were all safely out of course) and the place is gone gone GONE)
It is a measure of my love for DH that I am still here, I hate it so much. He bought it not long before we moved in together and if I had thought for one second I would ever have to live here I would have begged him to find somewhere else. I have been miserable for ten years now in this shithole. Blush

FabbyChic · 02/01/2012 19:17

NO it will do nothing but devalue the house you buy, it won't go up in value but just go down as the house next door gets worse.

hwjm1945 · 02/01/2012 19:26

don't buy, derelict for a reason, reason prob that not enough value in the house or area for anyone to pay to do it up and recopu monies. also, unsafe to live next door to that sort of activity, not snobbish jsut sensible, do yuo want teeange DDs living next to place where drink and drugs are likely consuemd ot excess by undesirabels? not safe sorry about the spelling

MsVestibule · 02/01/2012 19:29

PomBear, that's awful! Why on earth haven't you sold it and bought somewhere else in those 10 years Confused? Or perhaps in 2007, you thought "we're definitely going to sell next next year"...

mrsjay · 02/01/2012 19:29

I didnt think i was being daft dh just saw the price and thought perfect Hmm .

If it's right next door you may also get problems with damp etc encroaching from house into yours (happened to my parents).

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 02/01/2012 20:08

We can't afford it, DH bought just before the price boom, and it is not very desirable area - then we had another 3 DCs. To move even to a comparable house, 3 bed semi just somewhere else, we'd need to double the mortgage and we just can't afford it :(

Vizzini · 02/01/2012 20:20

That's a shame PomBear. I think we live in the same town?

OP. YANBU. If you don't love it, don't buy it. It's such a huge commitment and if you're not happy now you won't ever be.

RufousBartleby · 02/01/2012 20:24

Pombear I have to ask - what on earth is the matter with your house?

Never known anyone live somewhere they hate that much for that long.

Pandemoniaa · 02/01/2012 20:26

YANBU in not wanting to buy a house which could well come with problems. YABU in not being able to spell "great" though.

hugglymugly · 02/01/2012 20:28

Contact the local council and see if they have a vigorous policy about abandoned/unmaintained houses - that seems to be something of a hot issue these days. If you get no joy from them, try the local MP.

FredFredGeorge · 02/01/2012 20:35

If the derelict house devalues the house next door, then you get a better house than you can otherwise afford because of it - it's unlikely to stay derelict forever - approach the great niece to buy it - even if you can't afford it it'll put the idea of selling it in her head.

Check with the council that they know that the property is not exempt from council tax anymore (which I can't see how it can be, but CT for the great neice is an expense she doesn't need!)

If it's really in an area where the owner can afford to leave it empty, pay the council tax and not see the need to sell then I can't see the area is a worthwhile one to live in.
