my dh doesn't like mumsnet much either :o

slavetofilofax · 02/01/2012 10:58

My dh is uncomfortable with MN sometimes too. He does completely accept it though, the same as I accept that he will watch the boringness that is darts on telly.

When I tell him about the things that I'm reading, he sees that it's no big deal, but he does like to ask what Im reading about quite often. My dh doesn't have the best conversational skills in the world so he loses interest quite quickly!

LadyBeagleEyes · 02/01/2012 11:05

I don't have a DH/Dp so I go on mumsnet whenever I like.

I only joined yesterday and my other half imhas been asking what I'm talking about on here, I think it's paranoia personally.
Men can be so self absorbed that they think everyone's talking about them!

Bonsoir · 02/01/2012 11:30

"Men can be so self absorbed that they think everyone's talking about them!"

Gosh I agree. Every time I talk to a girlfriend DP is absolutely certain that we are gossiping about our DH/DPs and complains about it. But he looks crestfallen when I tell him that we talked about other things entirely!

edam · 02/01/2012 11:32

does he submit all his hobbies for your approval? If not, tell him to feck off and mind his own business. The bit about objecting to the tone would really irritate me - what is he, your headmaster?

working9while5 · 02/01/2012 11:45

Check how long you are on for. I was online far too much a few months ago, really was a bit tired and down and using it to zone out. Dh complained I spent all day "socialising" online and barely spoke to him. He had a point..

DH sometimes asks me to find advice about stuff (admittedly practical rather than emotionalSmile) on MN.

And like SayCool's DH, he reads over my shoulder

There's no 'general tone' on MN, there are many many tones depending on the poster. There are ladettes, there are intellectuals, there are comediennes but mostly there are ordinary women seeking answers to the questions that you don't find in the index for the handbook of life.

wannaBe · 02/01/2012 12:02

I think it depends what he doesn't like. A lot of people come on here and post the most intimate details of their personal lives on here - details which include personal details about their partners. I can see why someone might not like that, for instance.

Nesbo · 02/01/2012 12:30

I think a lot of people would be pretty horrified to discover that their partner was airing their personal life or venting about them on an internet forum. Given that he has probably seen the amount that happens on MN I'm not that surprised he isn't overly keen. Some people have very different levels of privacy but if they live with someone who likes to "share" with all and sundry that can be very uncomfortable. Accepting that it happens with RL friends is one thing, but an Internet forum can feel like it crosses a line.

DH kept saying jokingly I must be having an affair as I'm on my blackberry so much and I suddenly realised he's actually not joking! he doesn't seem to realise that xmas with the inlaws was so bloody boring it's much more interesting discussing baby names and laughing at other people's crazy families

FellatioNelson · 02/01/2012 12:51

My DH does the same as LeQueen's - tuts and huffs loudly and makes barbed comments if he thinks I'm on MN too much and nothing of any use that is under the heading of 'Fell's jobs' gets done. He may have a point actually. Blush

At first he really resented the amount of time I spent on here and I think he was wondering if I was secretly having cyber sex trysts with some Butcher from Bolton called Bernard, or an Accountant from Aldershot called Alan, but now he has checked up on me got the measure of MN a bit, he is not remotely threatened by it - just a bit bewildered and irritated by my devotion to you all.

FellatioNelson · 02/01/2012 12:54

Mrsrobertduvall - Pah! Eighteen hours a week is nothing. You are lightweight. I'm sure my personal worst best must be somewhere around there in a day.

(only slightly joking)

I've been here for two weeks and both DH and I LOVE it. It sparks conversation about a wide range of issues between us. If you're not on all the time your DH has no basis for telling you not to be here.

Fecklessdizzy · 02/01/2012 14:03

Adversecamber Nope, but he's definitely in touch with his inner Boffin Grin If any of us has trouble sleeping we just get him started on string theory ...

VivaLaSativa · 02/01/2012 14:29

My Dp has a love hate relationship with MN.

He will howl with laughter at some threads but gets all arsey if I try to discuss difficult threads with him (certain topics in relationships and feminism).

MN has been cited in rows that we have had too, That is the point where discussion ends because I see it as childish and controlling.

I think certain things hit nerves,
I like to discuss and he is a more sweep stuff under the rug and ignore person.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 02/01/2012 14:33

My DH has immense respect for the 'hive mind' aspect. He knows I talk about him on here because I'll show him the thread or let him know what people said if it's relevant. I think it's not nice to let your partner know you're talking about them with mutual friends TBH, so this is better because it's all anonymous.

I think if you can't talk to your partner about problems honestly, the least of your worries is that you're airing those problems on an internet forum. I really disagree with nesbo ... I mean posting 'DH farts a lot, has a tiny penis and lives at no. 23, do you know the bloke I mean?' would be out of order, but otherwise, why does it matter?
