to not check what may be a pooh because DS is finally asleep?

DS keeps waking up in the night, last few days has been every hour. Finally got him back to sleep just now after a 25 minute battle, but realised there was a bad smell in the room. Am 85% sure it is a dirty nappy, although he's had really bad gas the past 2 days. AIBU not to wake him up to check whether it is a pooh?

check it - he will have a really sore bum in the morning- i have had this issue and it's so tempting to leave them, but i get everything ready for the fastest nappy change, lights down low, wipes ready etc and then back into bed, no talking etc!!

You have to check it, he little bottom could be raw in the morning if you don't.

Perhaps he will sleep through it! Warm the washcloth!

I often get DS up and he's pooed at some point through the night of which I've not noticed. He sleeps through the night so never any need for me to be going in to check his nappy. Never once has he become sore in over 12 months so it's certainly not harming him.

That said, I still don't think I could rest knowing beforehand he was laying in a dirty nappy. If your DS will be awake again in an hour, then maybe change him then? Or are you hoping he now sleeps through meaning you'll leave him till morning?

If he's asleep, I'd leave him.

Thumbinnapuddingwitch · 02/01/2012 03:07

oh dear, yes I'm afraid I agree that you should really check - I think I did this once and DS's bum was very sore in the morning (and it very rarely was). It's really not worth it to leave him, even if it feels like it at the moment.

If he's habitually waking every hour I would wait for now. Perhaps set your alarm for 90 minutes' time and check then? He needs his sleep too...

Thanks for all your thoughts.
I left him, he woke again an hour later and I changed him then. It was the tiniest pooh in the world! (But so very stinky). My wish for 2012? That he starts sleeping as well as he did at 6 months of age! Ahh those blissful nights...

Are you sure he's not a bit bunged up? Wakefulness, fussiness, lots of gas & teeny tiny very stinky poo could be from constipation.

JenniferEight · 02/01/2012 19:03

I did this once and never again, he was so sore when he woke Sad You don't know till you've done it once.

I would try and change him in the cot though (well mind slept on /in my bed which may have been easier to access!) just gently remove trousers/nappy, wipe bottom, replace nappy.

I'm glad you've done it OP, that's just my tip for next time Smile
