to ask what you do with the kids' leftovers?

Like many of you, I expect, I am starting 2012 with a resolution to eat healthily and lose weight. One of my biggest weaknesses is finishing off the kids' leftovers. So tonight me, DH and the 3 DCs have just eaten spinach and ricotta cannelloni for supper. There are 2 bits of cannelloni left. I am NOT NOT NOT not going to eat them however much I want to! But what would you do?

  1. Throw them away. Seems like such a waste!
  2. Put them in a tupperware box the fridge. But it's not enough for a full meal for DH or me. Would be enough for 1 of the DCs but it's rare I'm feeding just 1 and not the other 2. And cannelloni isn't really something you snack on between meals. So I'll just end up throwing them away anyway in a week or so.

Personally I have a bit of an issue. I can't face eating other people's leftovers. If it is very intact leftovers I may put it in a container for my OH to eat, but then he is a very 'snack happy' person and will eat it later or the next day.

Our cat usually polishes off anything that dd leaves.

The cat is on a new year diet.

timetomoveon · 01/01/2012 18:22

Once I realised how much extra food I was actually eating by finishing off leftovers, I started throwing it in the bin. If you're trying to lose weight, throw it away.....or feed them stuff you don't like Grin

either keep it for the DC's and pad it out with something, or throw it away

Chundle · 01/01/2012 18:22

I can't eat others leftovers but my oh always does!! Try using smaller portion sizes. Or get a dog :)

Tee2072 · 01/01/2012 18:24

Throw it away or into the compost heap.

Save it for lunch.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 01/01/2012 18:26

Depends if they'd been on anyone's plate - my children tend to lick/poke/nibble things to the extent I wouldn't want to eat it afterwards. If it's serving dish leftovers, I usually get husband to take it to work for lunch the next day, if it's not a full meal's worth he can take half a sandwich as well.

OnTheBen10DaysofChristmas · 01/01/2012 18:27

I just ate his Blush

EndoplasmicReticulum · 01/01/2012 18:27

Trouble with my children is I never quite know how much they will eat - son 2 in particular can vary between shovelling in an almost adult portion or eating very little, regardless of whether he usually likes the meal. So we often have bits left over, as I've made stuff assuming he'll be in an eating mood.

gamerwidow · 01/01/2012 18:30

I do have a tendency to eat my DD's leftovers but as of today they will be going straight into the compost bin.

pigletmania · 01/01/2012 18:30

In the bin or rather the slop bucket

gastrognome · 01/01/2012 18:30

Freeze what's left. Then reheat on one of the rare days you do only have one child to feed.

Kellogg · 01/01/2012 18:31

Dog, cats, chickens . No such thing leftovers.

whackamole · 01/01/2012 18:31

I save it for lunch for the following day although rarely will they eat the same thing 2 days in a row so sometimes it stays in there for weeks until I bin it

OH annoys me all the time in that he will bin anything left over. Leftover mash can be made into potato cakes which the boys love - but OH will just bin anything left in the pans after dinner. On the other hand, he won't bin anything left on plates and will attempt to wash down the sink.

Onlyaphase · 01/01/2012 18:32

Dogs or cats eat leftovers round here. I never have to bin food other than curries etc .

littlemisssarcastic · 01/01/2012 18:34

I used to eat my DS's leftovers, until one particular meal many years ago.

We had sat down to chinese stir fry. It was delicious, and I ate all of mine. DS decided he had had enough so I got a spoon and scooped a mouthful up, only to find it was watery and tasteless. Hmm

DS, Why is your dinner all watery?

DS replied 'Oh that's the bit I chewed and spat out.

I have never touched leftovers since then.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 01/01/2012 18:34

We have no leftovers.

I always cook extra roast for bubble and squeak the next day tho.

rhondajean · 01/01/2012 18:35

How likely are you to eat them?

Some people just spray them with kitchen cleaner and bin them so as not to be able to sneak to fridge later.

If you can be trusted then I would box them for lunch tomorrow. As long as they are clean enough, as someone else said earlier.

rhondajean · 01/01/2012 18:36

Btw, I'd reserve to the DCs with lots of salad and some crusty bread to pad it out.

I give them to the chickens.

Another option is to buy a wormery and give leftovers to the worms - you then get good compost so you could grow some healthy veg in a spare corner of the garden.

eurochick · 01/01/2012 19:56

Think of it like this: are you really an alternative to the kitchen bin or do you value yourself more highly than that?

poorbuthappy · 01/01/2012 19:56

I have learnt to never feed the dog her tea before the kids have finished theirs!
Although I am a terrible picker of their leftovers, so will stop and hopefully lose some weight.
