aibu to think that bumped old threads should be highlighted in some way by mumsnet to draw attention to this fact so that you don't post on it??? who agrees?

OP posts:

Is there still a Flouncer's Corner?

Mumofmollyandjosh · 01/01/2012 17:08

Thank you Birds. You're obviously one of the nicer ones, and I wish you well.

Bohica · 01/01/2012 17:09

Yes, we still have a flouncers corner. Haven't seen a good one for awhile though!

SiamoNellaMerda · 01/01/2012 17:11

I haven't looked in there for ages. Must be due but it does need a really good one to make it worth the trip!

Mumofmolly

When a thread is posted on it gets bumped to the top of the board. There are thousands of threads on each board, most of the ones on the first page are current or recent. When an old thread gets bumped people read it assuming it is recent. Also, the previous posters are highly unlikely to read anything you write, so you are effectively talking to yourself.

Jacksmania · 01/01/2012 17:20

Mumofmollyandjosh, please stay. It's a really great site. You're right likening it to a virtual playground :o - you've got the bullies and the lovely ones and everything in between.
AIBU can be fucking scary a bit harsh but you can always stay away from it or lurk and read only for amusement, and you'll spot the more aggressive posters quickly, but really, it's lots of fun otherwise and supportive. Happy New Year btw, to everyone.

Jacksmania · 01/01/2012 17:23

I think it would be a good idea to have older threads highlighted in some way. Not comp savvy enough to know if this could be done but would be great if there was a way to flag a thread where it's been longer than x months (whatever is appropriate) since the OP or maybe even the last post. Yes, we could always look at the date of the OP :o, but, well, obviously that gets missed occasionally.

Mumofmollyandjosh · 01/01/2012 17:23

THank you everyone.

YANBU

I have seen miscarriage threads bumped a year later- Would the op really wanted to be reminded of something like that?

Weaning threads that are so old the baby is now at school!

Dyslexic thread once where the child will have left school by now - it was a 7 year old thread!

I do like the idea of some sort of colour coding for threads over a certain age, or make it impossible to post to threads over a certain age. If someone wants to refer to it they can always link to it in a new thread.

Mumofmollyandjosh · 01/01/2012 17:39

idiotic newbies who haven't got a clue!!! ha ha ha. Maybe I should start a thread on irritating things newbies do! ha ha

EricNordmanfirandMistletoe · 01/01/2012 17:41

idiotic newbies who haven't got a clue!!!

Who said that?

TheMonster · 01/01/2012 18:10

I like the idea of a different colour for older threads.

Flisspaps · 01/01/2012 18:14

There was one about a toddler getting out of their pyjamas recently, it turned out to be from 2002 and said toddler would now be at secondary school. It would be useful to go have old threads coloured in some way, if only so the 'bumper' can be alerted by others to start a new thread in order to get relevant replies rather than additional responses to the (often now irrelevant) OP

ThePathanKhansWitch · 01/01/2012 18:15

mumofmolly please don't go! I thinl i bumped an old thread once and was suitable punished ticked off Smile. It's the programme hereGrin.

gettingeasier · 01/01/2012 18:19

What thread got bumped then ?

Yep have been caught out getting knee deep in a thread and suddenly catching the date, I usually check now

Mumofmollyandjosh · 01/01/2012 18:20

Don't you think... (as I did) that most old threads are 'researched' to find something (and often personal) out about a particular subject. I just offered some words of encouragement because it rang true. I certainly didn't want it broadcast that what I was looking into!

I've learnt - read only.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 01/01/2012 18:21

mumof I have no idea what you are on about Confused

GoingForGoalWeight · 01/01/2012 18:22

I bumped an old thread about neighbour from hell stories.

Kill me

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 01/01/2012 18:26

Yes you can read the threads for info but if you post on it it gets bumped to the top. Though nobody is interested in which threads you are reading, honestly :)

Mumofmollyandjosh · 01/01/2012 18:27

Also, having done it myself without realising tonight, I don't like the thought of somebody getting a hold of a thread that I posted at any time, and making it new news. It's essentially 'stealing' someone's often personal thought/request/problem. I wrote on some words that I thought would help the OP in an old post, and the result has been making it new news - more than that..... a whole new post and discussion!

It kind of defeats the object of one aspect of mumsnet....being able to get input/advice/encouragement and help for a certain situation, at a certain time.

I will know in future only to message - which again - defeats the object of having places to write on an OPs thread.

festi · 01/01/2012 18:46

messaging tends not to happen in here though. I get that point about messaging however posters know that the thread is public and so best not identify self too much.

mommagoestoiceland · 01/01/2012 19:07

me me me it saves time.
