Ok, its a kind of wwyd too but periodically i dye my hair red... I am 39 and in the last 6 months of my phd...

Last night i bleached my hair and then put crazy colour fire red on.... It is now bright red!!

I then remembered I have an interview next friday! I already work for the organisation (huge) 1 day a week in one role and this is for a 2 day a week role (different) that will enable me to write up my phd and hopefully have time to do some publications before i can get a lectureship.... Its the same faculty as my job btw...

Do you think i should keep my flame red hair for the interview or should I tame it down for the interview??

Hmm
Ihatecbeebies · 01/01/2012 15:33

Your hair colour shouldn't affect whether you get the job or not, but personally I'd tone down for it. I love dying my hair red too but am in my honours year so will dye a more natural colour for interviews when I finish in May.

Wittsend13 · 01/01/2012 15:33

Depends on how professional you want to look. I personally would tone it down.

Llanbobl · 01/01/2012 15:34

I guess a lot depends on what you are studying - if art/design etc you could probably pull it off. However if law or something similar then it might be harder. Personally I'd be a bit 'cat's bum face' and for me it could be the deal breaker if you and another candidate tied. On the other hand the colour of your hair doesn't make you more intelligent/less intelligent more capable/less capable etc than anyone else.

Just wear a nice, sensible hat. Like this.

Problem solved Smile

therealsantaisagrinch · 01/01/2012 15:55

Love the hat!

Not law or art and design but the role is a semi-sensible one... Think i might tone it down...

Academics rarely wash dress conservatively, so I wouldn't worry.

OldMumsy · 01/01/2012 17:48

Depends who interviews you. Why make it potentially more different? At 39 you surely cannot still be rebelling against 'the man'?

NeedlesCuties · 01/01/2012 17:54

I laughed aloud at that hat! Xmas Grin

My hair is green and pink at the moment, so I can't judge you OP. I'm a SAHM though so no one to dislike my hair colour choice.

Could you tie it back so it's a bit less in-their-face? They can still see it but not as dazzling?

I prob wouldn't bother trying to tone it down, but if it is going to knock your confidence then you should.

Elderberries · 01/01/2012 17:57

Wash in wash out colour? Its about how you feel too.

snuffaluffagus · 01/01/2012 18:00

Mine is bright red and I've never toned it down for an interview but I suppose my industry is a bit arty and relaxed.. it depends on the field you're going into doesn't it.. I wouldn't say it would put them off if it's neat and you are dressed well.

catgirl1976 · 01/01/2012 18:48

i used to have bright pink hair but dyed it brown for a job interview. 7 years on i still work for the same company and they have since said i would not have got the job had i had pink hair

tone it down.............

sorry - i loved my pink hair but i wanted the job more - think you may need to make the same choice :( as others have said it does depend on your field though - mine is very dull, male and conservative :(

zookeeper · 01/01/2012 19:16

I wouldn't take the risk and would tone it down.

thepeoplesprincess · 01/01/2012 19:24

Maybe tone it down for the interview, but not so much that you'd never feel able to jazz it up at a later date.

Oblomov · 01/01/2012 19:33

Def tone it down. A wash-in-wash-out would be best. Thent he next day, you will be pink again.

Lueji · 01/01/2012 19:37

If on science it probably won't matter. :-) it depends on the organisation.

Just make sure you conduct yourself professionally.

sprinkles77 · 01/01/2012 19:39

I think tone it down. You are unlikely to miss out on a job due to conservative hair, but how pissed off would you be if you missed out due to the red? I have quite an alternative look that I have to tone down as I have a very grown up job and work with very elderly people who might find it hard to trust me otherwise. Once people know you better you can be yourself a bit more.

therealsantaisagrinch · 01/01/2012 21:41

Thank you everyone, i think i may get a semi perm burgendy to pop over the bright red and then redo the bright red once that washes out.... It is a 'modern' organisation but the role is a 'grown up one' so perhaps caution is needed....
