to wish guests would stop leaving things and wanting me to post them back?

We've not had guests to stay who've not left something behind when they leave, and despite several of us double checking, there's always something on the chest of drawers/in the shower/behind the front door.
I've had to post back glasses, underwear, glass lid for a baking dish, car keys, hairbrush, handbag with contents, christmas presents, 4 packets of biscuits, amongst other things. I currently have a pair of old socks for one person, a hat/gloves for another and a weaning spoon for someone else.
I don't mind most of the time but some times it just gets a bit annoying. The weaning spoon is from someone in the States who keeps asking for it but it'll cost more than it would to buy a set of new ones. I've offered to buy her some from Amazon to replace it but she wants this one.

Just having a whinge really cos it's dark, raining, my neighbour's guinea pig died whilst under my tender care and I've got indigestion.

Stop having guests to stay. Sorted. Grin

To2012AndBeyondTheLimits · 01/01/2012 15:08

Wow thats a lot!
You need a lost property box, they pick it up next time they visit Grin

To2012AndBeyondTheLimits · 01/01/2012 15:08

Hang on, was it you that posted a few weeks ago that SIL wanted you to post a pillow? Grin

Chulita · 01/01/2012 15:09

Not me thank goodness!

Wouldn't have a problem with returning things, but you shouldn't be picking up the cost.

Chulita · 01/01/2012 15:14

Some people only visit once a year or less so hanging onto them won't really work, the hat/gloves belong to an Australian so I need to try and reunite them before they leave the country!
I do resent paying £2.80 to post back an old pair of SIL's boyfriend's socks though.
If I left something I'd offer to pay postage but no one ever does.

Just say you have posted them and they are on their way. Sometimes things get lost...

Bogeyface · 01/01/2012 15:14

I would post it back as soon as they paypal you the postage!

Its very rude to nag you to put yourself out of pocket to return something that THEY left behind!

Email back with "OK will post it, the cost will be £/$XX, do you want to send it paypal or bank transfer?" Just assume that they will be paying and dont post a damned thing until they do!

tigana · 01/01/2012 15:18

was just about to suggest telling them you have posted them....shame things get lost in the mail...but see bodyofeeyore has already done so Grin. Deffo this option for a chuffing weaning spoon!

is there an opposite of kleptomania... for people who leave things rather than take them...? You have the most forgetful bunch of acquaintances ever!

scarletforya · 01/01/2012 15:19

The cheek of someone asking you to post socks Shock

Just laugh at them and point blank refuse!!

ahhyesiseeyouvepooedonsanta · 01/01/2012 15:20

Just post them without a stamp then they have to pay postage

AllGoodNamesGone · 01/01/2012 15:20

For the non important stuff, just deny all knowledge in future, say you have checked everywhere and can't see whatever random item it is but will let them know if you find it...

Chulita · 01/01/2012 15:21

Ah, post without a stamp - now that's an idea! :)

You posted back 4 packets of biscuits? Xmas Biscuit

CrotchFlakes · 01/01/2012 15:27

BISCUITS?

Surely not Shock

Why would you post back biscuits - how unique were they?

Bogeyface · 01/01/2012 15:31

They were probably the biscuits on this thread! :o

Trills · 01/01/2012 15:34

Biscuits?

YAB a bit bonkers to post biscuits.

ThierryHenryismyBoyfriend · 01/01/2012 15:36

I would get them to send you a pre paid packaging for you to return the items in.

JustHecate · 01/01/2012 15:36

just tell them that it will be £X to post it, plus £X for the packaging and here is your paypal account and when the P&P is there, you'll post it.

Chulita · 01/01/2012 16:44

There's always a good reason why I should, the biscuits were my Grandad's, he spun a sob story about needing them and not being able to get to the shops etc so I felt sorry for him and posted them.
People always seem to leave their best underwear, favourite hat, last packet of malted milks in the whole of Albion, gold-rimmed spectacles...you get the general idea.
I feel really tight asking for the postage but we must spend £30+ a year just returning things to forgetful friends/relatives.

We live in Cornwall and had a lot of visitors over the summer. Each one left something behind. The problem I found was that no one realised that they were one in a number of people who wanted their bits posted back. I don't begrudge sending it but my bill when I took 6 parcels to the PO was a bit of a shock!

That doesn't help I know but i share your pain Angry

Chulita · 01/01/2012 16:50

badroly at least I'm not alone :)

oh god MIL always does this - she packs at lightning speed and always leaves a random scattering of possessions. Last time it was full bottles of shampoo and conditioner, books, a scarf and numerous foodstuffs (that we don't eat).

I draw the line at posting Bisto granules.

Hassled · 01/01/2012 17:08

I think you're a living saint - I'd just deny all knowledge. "No, I have no idea where your gold rimmed spectacles are, I'm afraid. They're definitely not here".
