to not know whether my baby should be seen by GP or not?

More of a WWYD

She's seven months old and has been snotty for a while (weeks), but I think her breathing sounds more wheezy today. Plus she has slept until 1PM, when we woke her, because we started to get a bit worried about her sleeping so long. She drinks a lot (BF) and wheezes on.

She doesn't have a temperature, and doesn't draw in the skin between her ribs when breathing in, which I guess is good, but I'm still not quite sure whether she's ok. Her nose is streaming with snot (of the greyish relativ liquid, not thick solid yellow variety). The biggest worry for me is the wheezing and tiredness

I know there can't be done much for a viral cold and I don't want to drag her to the germ factory hospital to be seen out of hours if they can't do anything for her but tell me to do TLC and wait it out, but I don't want to wait out things too long if she actually should be seen.

Add into that, that I'm a bit of a worrier anyway - so I'm always a bit weary of overreacting and being a time waster.

So, do you reckon I should wait and unless she gets a fever she'll be fine or should I get her seen now before it gets worse?

I would take her if you really think she's wheezy. I may have tended to the better safe than sorry side when mines were babies though. But they are both still here in one piece!!

WorraLiberty · 31/12/2011 14:15

At that age I would take her for your own peace of mind to be honest

And I would take her as soon as you can because with it being NYE, they're bound to get busy with drunks later.

I wish her better Smile

Marshy · 31/12/2011 14:16

Iwould get her seen as you are clearly concerned. You are not a time-waster, just a concerned parent - no one will have an issue with that

workshy · 31/12/2011 14:17

if she is struggling with her breathing it can be exhausting -hence the sleep

if she is feeding ok and not breaking off all the time then TLC will probably be ok but there is no such thing as over cautious with a baby under 1

where I live we have an out of hours GP, you ring up, speak to the nurse and then are given a time to see docs so no waiting around at A&E -would that be available to you?

Lambzig · 31/12/2011 14:18

I would take her. My DD has breathing difficulties and wheezing and occasionally needs hospital/GP clinic treatment on a nebuliser (sorry if thats spelt wrong). She never gets a fever with it, so its not always a natural conclusion. She is probably fine, but my doctor says that they never mind seeing a baby as they would rather make sure.

naturalbaby · 31/12/2011 14:21

i phoned nhs direct about weeziness, and also couldn't work out if his face round his mouth looked a bit grey/blue so didn't feel happy about it. he was only 8weeks old but they told us to go to a&e (it was fri night) and they made us stay in for observation as he had bronciolitis.

WidowWadman · 31/12/2011 14:21

workshy - yep, we have that service, I guess I'll give them a ring. All she's been doing today is drinking and snoozing. With short breaks to look around, but not her usual level of activity. I'm just not sure, as there's no temperature.

Thank you all

Could be croup? I would contact out of hours GP tbh.

Rikalaily · 31/12/2011 14:23

Dd3 was similar a few weeks ago, no temp, no cough, snotty nose and wheezing... it was a chest infection but in the early stages so she wasn't very very poorly with it, she was also sleeping more.

anonacfr · 31/12/2011 14:24

I'd be worried about the tiredness. At that age they normally sleep less, not more. Could you call your GP for advice?

WidowWadman · 31/12/2011 14:32

Out of hours GP rang back immediately and asked me to bring her in. Thanks for reassuring me that I'm not a helicopter

Could it be bronchilitis?
My baby girl had this a few weeks ago and it seems to be back ( although she has hardly coughed today so fingers crossed )
Is he coughing along with the wheezing?

999HELPMYPUDDINGSONFIRE · 31/12/2011 14:41

A helicopter?? He he
Let us know how she gets on x

LoopyLoopsHootyHoots · 31/12/2011 14:44

:) Hope she's OK. :)

PeneloPeePitstop · 31/12/2011 14:51

Go with your gut.
It sounds like you're really not very happy so get her seen x

WidowWadman · 31/12/2011 17:35

Just come back from GP (took ages to be seen) and he thinks it's a chest infection on one side (not sure whether that makes a difference), so we've been given penicillin to clear it. They don't usually prescribe it lightly in my area, so I guess it was the right thing to go.
