AIBU to wish all clothes sizes were the same in different shops?

It bugs me that I can be a 12 in one shop and a 16 in another. Actually I dont mind being a 12, but it makes me sad when I have to buy size 16 Having to try every last thing on was a nightmare. But just as well I did because most things did not fit and I had to get another size.

Did you stop off at Maccy D's on the way?

ScarfOfSexualPreference · 30/12/2011 20:20

Hmm see the thing is, I have so little choice in plus-sized clothing it actually works out well if sizes are randomly larger. At the moment I shop in Evans, M+S, New Look, occasionally Sainsbury's, and thats IT for plus sizes on the high street. Yet sometimes I'll find a random top or whatever in a 'normal' size. Like I got a top in size 18 from ASDA while in New Look I'm a 24. So... I think YABU but I totally see where you're coming from!

BleurghUna · 30/12/2011 20:24

YANBU, I am anything betwen a 10 and a 14 depending on the make but I know my weight doesn't fluctuate that much! I wish the industry used standard sizing. But I don't think it's goint go happen when some shops want to flatter their larger customers into buying a 10, others think 10s are tiny.

Dinosaurdrip · 30/12/2011 20:31

Yanbu I bought a pair of trousers in next and decided I liked them so much I was going to buy another pair in a different colour, have checked and double checked the size and style etc and they are the same but of the two pairs of trousers one fits the other doesn't. Arrrghhh.

SmegmaNotJustForChristmas · 30/12/2011 20:35

I think you'll find sizing pretty standard amonst certain kinds of shops.

High priced high st shops aimed at young 20somethings... will run small.

Sainsbury/m&S/tesco/asda types will run larger than than that.

oiwheresthecoffee · 30/12/2011 20:36

I have been everything from a 4 to a 10...all of which still fit , not clothes ive had at different times ! Places like topshop/la senza (pjs) are TINY !

joanofarchitrave · 30/12/2011 20:39

I don't mind it. There are shops where nothing suits me because they are aimed at a different body shape - I'm looking at you Monsoon with your hourglass figure stuff and at you M&S with your teeny short tops that finish just below my ribs. Thank goodness they are not all the same.

rootietootie · 30/12/2011 21:09

I probably wouldn't be so bothered but the town was absolutely heaving today and fitting rooms queues were nightmare. Im probably a size 14. 12 in New Look, 16 in Matalan in trousers, but skirts am a size 14. Dont know if it was because there are a lot of sales on but really struggled to find size 14s, loads of 6, 8's and 10's though :( curse you last pregnancy

"I'm looking at you Monsoon with your hourglass figure stuff"

Brilliant. I will have alook in there next time I'm passing. I'm sick of looking at clothes made for women with square bodies with no waist - yes I'm looking at you Next and M & S.

rootie I agree. I also wish that stores had some kind of uniformity - yes M & S. I have skirts sized 8 and 10 and trousers sized 12 all from M & S.

roses2 · 31/12/2011 09:33

A 18 year old size 6 has a different body shape than a 40 year old size 6. Shops size their clothes to fit the age range they are aiming for hence why the same size differs. A clothing designer told me that.

Diamondback · 31/12/2011 12:42

YANBU - it's just gash! I'm anything from a 10 to an 18 depending on the shop. It's a pain, as I never know what I'm going to be, so I have to take two or three of everything into the changing room, then I can't take everything in because I have too many items!

Also, a clothes designer may claim it's because of 'different body shapes', but is it really healthy that it's mainly the clothes aimed at teenagers that have TINY sizings, therefore convincing lovely slim teenagers that they are a size 16 (when in real life they're more like a 10)?

Moominsarescary · 31/12/2011 12:54

I Brought some jeans from next for a night out, didn't try them on as my other jeans are from next and they didn't bloody fit

startail · 31/12/2011 12:56

YANU
At least with different shops being different sizes, I can sometimes find something to fit.
Having small tits and medium waist and large hips a standardised fit the majority size 16 dress would not fit.

mummymccar · 31/12/2011 13:09

Try dressipi.com - they have a service which tells you what size you are in every shop and I know they are going to make this into an app soon (if they haven't already). It's free to join up and has been pretty spot on for me so far.

confusedpixie · 31/12/2011 13:24

YANBU. I discovered that I'm a size 8 waist in Next (I think) last week. A size 8! I'm usually a 12 on the waist and may have lost a little weight recently but not two dress sizes! Was quite chuffed though Blush Whereas I'm a 10/12 top in New Look according to the clothes I bought yesterday (usually an 8 top as I have no boobs)

They should standardise it, drives me mad!

Ifancyashandy · 31/12/2011 13:38

I really don't find this. I am a size 10 - 12 in all the shops I go in (Zara, Top Shop, Warehouse, Whistles, Mango, Mint Velvet, Ted Baker, Cos etc). And M&S for pj's, vests, sports gear.

Not disputing that it happens but it's never happened to me. I pick up my size, it fits or looks like shit because of the style but the sizing discrepancy? Never experienced it.

Bunbaker · 01/01/2012 10:19

I am a 10/12 and do have problems with standard fits, but I don't shop in places like Top Shop (think mutton dressed as lamb)
