I'm interested in opinions on this as it has spilt the household

My old hoover broke so ds1's girlfriend took it outside to be collected by the binmen..

However as she was leaving the entrance, a couple entering the building asked 'are you thowing that away ,can we have it?'

She explained it was broken and spitting out dust as a cloth had been sucked up the nossle.

'No problem ' said the guy I repair hoovers as a trade. So she gave it to him

All good in my book , but when she back and explained what happened some folk DS1, and two dh's of my friends told her she was wrong and she should have asked him for £20 for the hoover if they wanted it????

Surely if you are throwing something out/away you can't charge someone who wants the item? (Hope this makes sense)

YANBU. She was chucking it out, the mad cow.

Anniegetyourgun · 30/12/2011 15:46

Well you can, if you want to, but it would be a bit Hmm

Eglu · 30/12/2011 15:48

YANBU, would have been very strange to ask people for money for it when they can see you are throwing it out.

CreamolaFoamless · 30/12/2011 15:52

that's what i thought, it was going in the bin anyway but the guys thought she should have asked for £20?

Were the objectors to it being a freebie all male?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 30/12/2011 15:53

I think it's a bit cheeky if they'd seen her chuck it! I thought you were going to say is it ok to ask for money then chuck something if you can't get the money ... that'd be fine, but the other, well, you'd have to have some front IMO.

Not that it's wrong, just a bit grabby.

hadagutsfull · 30/12/2011 15:55

If you gave it to someone who just happened to ask for it, then YANBU. But, if the bloke repairs them as a trade, presumably he was going to repair it and then sell it on so it wouldn't have hurt for him to offer you something, or for you to ask.

Some years ago we gave our old (but still in good nick) settee & armchairs to friends. They then gaily informed us a few months later that they SOLD it (can't remember how much for) and put the cash towards a new suite! I was a bit Xmas Angry and couldn't believe they'd told us ...

OTheHugeManatee · 30/12/2011 15:59

That's silly. If she said 'ok, gis £20 then' and they said 'no', she'd have had to jut go put it in the bin. At which point they'd have gone to the bin and fetched it out again. And she'd have felt like a bit of a twat.

SuePurblybilt · 30/12/2011 16:02

That is very mean and skanky of your friends/Dh/whoever it was Creamy . Of course she couldn't have asked for money for it.

hadagutsfull, the rule is that if you get it for free, you give it for free. That is proper etiquette and your friends should not have sold the sofa.

TheMonster · 30/12/2011 16:03

When our old fridge broke we put it on the driveway in order to take it to the tip. A chap was driving byu and stopped and asked for it. He said he could repair it and sell it. No problem - saved us a trip to the tip. It also means someone who may not be able to afford a new one got a refurbished fridge. Helped the environment by not going to the tip too. Everyone's a winner.

coppertop · 30/12/2011 16:05

Where I live, the binmen would have refused to take it and the council would have charged you £20 to get rid of it for you. So you might not have gained £20 but you would have certainly saved it.

festi · 30/12/2011 16:08

would the bin men take a hoover? not round here they would nt. and its a waste to throw away and not repair herself it was just a blocked nozle. but she was not be u to not ask for money

slavetofilofax · 30/12/2011 16:10

She could have asked for money, it wouldn't have been wrong, but it wouldn't have been nice either.

Where do you live that your binmen will pick up old hoovers??

GrendelsMum · 30/12/2011 16:10

Sounds very sensible of her to me - he might not have been able to repair it, so why would he pay £20 for it?

BodyOfEeyore Surely the guys at the tip would've salvaged it too had it got that far and it was economic for anyone to fix? But yes no-one is harmed by any of it and I think it would be pretty ick to charge someone for something you were throwing away.

The guy is going to invest his time and maybe parts to make maybe 10quid for a 2nd hand hoover - good luck to him!

CreamolaFoamless · 30/12/2011 16:18

Twenty quid Shock. I sold a working hoover at a car boot sale (it was working but not very efficient and made a horrible noise) - we got a pound for it!

TheMonster · 30/12/2011 17:00

They recycle parts yes.
