He has gone, quite literally, mad.

He seems to have regressed and thinks he's a ten week old kitten again. He's chasing shadows across the floor, attacking the lower branches of the Christmas tree, taking running jumps at the windowsill and skidding under the curtains.

Why? What is this madness?

AIBU to think that someone's been on the catnip?

He's a cat. Sounds perfectly normal, for a cat.

I witnessed my twin sibling cats rolling around the floor yowling and duffing each other up the other week, like they used to when they were kittens. The trigger? He dared wash the top of her head and she tried to reciprocate. They are 8.

WorraLiberty · 29/12/2011 22:10

Did he get any new toys for Christmas?

Some of them have catnip in them Grin

LordOfTheFlies · 29/12/2011 22:11

Or you've let him see that scene in Puss In Boots where he chases the light.

crazynanna · 29/12/2011 22:12

My kitten is trying to jump up the wall! Is that normal? Or is she trying to escape cos she hates us?

toweraboveyou · 29/12/2011 22:12

I thought you meant it sneezes.

LordOfTheFlies · 29/12/2011 22:12

Or you have a ghost that only the cat can see......

Sparklingbrook · 29/12/2011 22:13

My furry baby leapt onto the sideboard that she has never been on in her life. Then jumped into the middle of the Christmas tree from it. She's 4. But she did have a catnip mouse for Christmas. Grin

SarahStratton · 29/12/2011 22:14

FailCat has spent most of Christmas halfway up the tree, hooking people as they walk past. Your cat sounds perfectly sane in comparison to FC's various exploits.

BalloonTwister · 29/12/2011 22:15

Perfectly normal. I have a cat that follows me round the village, stalking my shadow and pouncing from behind hedges. I'd be ever so grateful for one that was only deranged in the privacy of my own home!

RagamuffinAndFidget · 29/12/2011 22:17

He didn't get any new toys for Christmas but knowing him he's probably out sourcing catnip all day long. And then selling it to younger, more impressionable cats.

At least he's not having one of his rage attacks, directed at our poor dog.

I'm making him sound like a rather unpleasant beast - he's actually lovely. Just mad.

She also thought it would be entertaining to get into the duvet cover with the duvet at the bottom by the buttons, and run to the top of the bed where I was asleep. So I knew she was there somewhere but couldn't see her. Hilarious. Hmm

bluebump · 29/12/2011 22:18

Maybe it's windy where you are - my cat used to do this if it was particularly windy outside Grin

crazynanna · 29/12/2011 22:21

My kitten goes crazy in thoses massive coop carrier bags, she runs to the bottom then flies out the opening like a bullet from a gun looking really shocked Grin
I supervise this activity as a) am scared she will suffocate and b) she gets her head stuck in the plastic handle!

Sparklingbrook · 29/12/2011 22:22

That's very true *bluebump> It's v windy here and she was in the garden earlier chasing a piece of bread about.

usualsuspect · 29/12/2011 22:23

My cat is obsessed with carrier bags and has now decided to only drink out of the bathroom tap .

He comes flying in the bathroom if he hears the tap turned on

naturalbaby · 29/12/2011 22:24

yanbu. all cats have ishoos.

Ginger4justice · 29/12/2011 22:26

Sparklingbrook that is hilarious. Grin

My two furry babies are 2.5 and are too sane compared to your kitties.
If a bit jumpy since dd (non-furry) started crawling.

RagamuffinAndFidget · 29/12/2011 22:26

It is windy here.

I have shut him in the hallway and he is throwing himself at the door. Maybe he's possessed? Should I go and check if his head is spinning?

crazynanna · 29/12/2011 22:30

He might be standing there like the milk ad...clicking his fingers and showing you his thumbs

Panadbois · 29/12/2011 22:38

They know the weather is changing - it's gonna SNOW. Grin

marriedandwreathedinholly · 29/12/2011 22:42

There may be a little moth or fly that you haven't noticed.

ddubsgirl · 29/12/2011 23:48

i think my cat is broken :( he got new toys from santa and doesnt want to know and 2 of them have cat nip and its not done a bloody thing to him :( but he has been poorly tho,got into a fight and over the weekend had a lump on his face which popped and is fine now but was off his food, thought it was that but next day was sick,he had eaten the netting off the beef, little sod had ripped bin bag open.

Em3978 · 30/12/2011 22:29

One of ours went completely nuts when we had a real Christmas tree, turned out he was drinking the tree-water and it sometimes sends them loopy! We have an artificial one now and he's most disappointed in us, has to make do with catnip toys!

IvantaOuiOui · 30/12/2011 22:35

one of the OuiCats has taken to eating toast over Christmas. Toast, ffs. She stares at us with sad kitten eyes if we have any.

RhondaGotStuckInTheChimneyRoo · 30/12/2011 22:36

Neither my cat or my kitten are fussed with catnip. Cat ignores completely and kitten just sniffs a lot.

Good job really, as kitten is an absolute lunatic! So far this week he has:

  • Stolen the dog's bone and growled whilst gnawing on it
  • Fallen into the (full) kitchen sink
  • Gone back to the (empty) kitchen sink, sat down and waited patiently for the drip from the tap
  • Dribbled all over anybody who has shown him affection (although he does this most days)
  • Stolen DD's ham from her plate, cheese nibbles from the table, a mushroom and then burnt his nose trying to peek into the oven.

My Cat on the other hand is so boring - she just comes in, eats, gets attacked by kitten, goes out, sneaks back in and goes to sleep somewhere he can't find her.
