to point out that the national speed limit on a dual carriageway is *70* and not *60*?

I am sure after the zillion AIBUs about drivers over Christmas this isn't necessary but WHY do some people not know the speed limit?

I know that the speed limit is a limit not a target; I'm fine with people driving at 60 if they think that's the appropriate speed for the road or the conditions. What I'm not fine with is pillocks who slam the breaks on every time they see a speed camera because they're doing 65 and think the limit is 60.

Moaning about this to friends at lunchtime, they did not know that the national speed limit on a dual carriageway is 70, not 60. They've passed their tests, btw, and have been driving for a while.

AIBU to think they're twats and so are the idiots I ended up behind today?

Speed limit is a maximum, not a target...

LRDtheFeministDragon · 29/12/2011 20:54

Read the OP.

The OP is not complaining about drivers who drive below the limit for the road. The OP is ranting about those who hurtle along at X mph then jump on their brakes when they see a speed camera.

playdead · 29/12/2011 20:57

Maybe the signage needs to be clearer. In Ireland we now have signs that say 60km, 100km, 120km etc. The national speed limit sign is no longer used.

Unfortunately, we still have people who drive at 80 in 100km areas and people who drive through dual carriageways (100km) and villages (50 or 60km) at 80km all the way and the ever popular brake bashers who slow to a crawl when they see a speed camera. When the speed limit is 100km it does actually mean you can drive at 100km Angry

It is quite ranty, this thread.

I did pass quite a lot of accidents and it is quite nervy, though. Not because I'm a crap driver (I hope and believe), but because you'd hope anyone who'd passed their test had the wit to learn the basics and keep them updated.

I'll take myself off to sit in a darkened room now, ok? Grin

Fizzy - no they aren't! Don't tell me there's more around the country?? Bloody hell, I was hoping the incompetence was isolated!

There are far too many permitted speed variables on the roads, there need to be more speed signs so everyone knows where they're at.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 29/12/2011 21:15

LRD how long have you been driving?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 29/12/2011 21:19

Just under ten years - sorry, do I come across as impatient?

I honestly don't drive aggressively and I am always careful to give learners and anyone who seems to be doing anything a bit odd plenty of space and time. I don't actually think this issue is a newbie driver issue though - I think it's simply people who didn't get the limit clear and probably speed out of habit, so when they see a camera they automatically slam the brakes on.

It was wet and I kept thinking they were bound to skid (thankfully none that I saw did!).

I would like to see more signs and clearer ones too, btw, it'd be much better.

Glad to be of use then unexpected! Smile

Someone said it was in force 40 years ago, but I wonder if it's one of those things that changes. It was certainly a theory test question when I took mine, and that was over ten years ago.
