To ask how many is too many?

DH and I think DC get an excessive amount of presents but not sure if it is in fact the norm. So quick straw poll please.

So, DS is 2.5 and DD is 11 months. They got approx. 70 presents between them.

1 was bought by us, rest from family and friends.

Is that a lot or normal?

Depends what they are, how many people are buying for them etc etc, impossible to put a figure on it

HowToLookGoodGlaikit · 26/12/2011 16:51

Normal here. I used 150 gift tagsthis year Shock I have 3 DC

HecateGoddessOfTwelfthNight · 26/12/2011 16:52

there's no such thing as normal, as far as I can see.

Mine got 7 each this year and a load of cash.

When they were younger and we were much better off Grin they easily got 30+ gifts each - from us! plus a santa stocking full of plastic tat Grin

Some people give their children one gift.

Some people give their children a hundred

Some people spend a tenner and some people spend a thousand.

If you're looking for the 'normal' in there, I wish you good luck Grin

My advice would be don't bother. Just do what you're happy with and don't worry about 'normal'

HecateGoddessOfTwelfthNight · 26/12/2011 16:53

oh yes, and one relative giving 35 gifts or 35 relatives giving one each?

It's 'how long is a piece of string' as far as I can see.

liveinazoo · 26/12/2011 16:54

it is unfortunately normal inmy house with 3kids get more than 35each courtesy of a dad that thinks gifts better than timeHmm.cant move in my front rom and as we only undo a few at a time so nothing gets lost in a sea of paper we still unwrap today!!!!personally i think way too many.i had under 10 as a child and was perfectly happy with that/life is way too material based these daysSad

liveinazoo · 26/12/2011 16:56

hecate-thats very philosophical for early evening, but entirely true

squeakytoy · 26/12/2011 16:57

Depends how big the family is...

I am sure your kids enjoy it, so why worry.

Kitchentiles · 26/12/2011 17:05

I guess it's about 15 people buying them 1-2 each plus MIL who goes bonkers and gets them about 10 each.

12 hour opening slot here too. :)

Lougle · 26/12/2011 17:08

YABU.

There are people here who couldn't afford 2 presents for their children and don't have large extended families.

There are so many things you could do if you feel like your children have too many presents.

Stealth boasting shouldn't be one of them.

Sparklingbaubles · 26/12/2011 17:11

I didn't realise we had to count them?

lurkinginthebackground · 26/12/2011 17:16

Depends on how large a family you have.
If you have endless aunts and uncles and various grandparents/step grandparents etc etc then it stands to reason you may get far more than someone with one mum and dad and only one set of grandparents iyswim.

Lonnie · 26/12/2011 17:16

I guess it's about 15 people buying them 1-2 each plus MIL who goes bonkers and gets them about 10 each.

I think that sounds utterly within norm. and I have to admit to be with your MIL I love buying presents for Christmas. counting stocking gifts mine are way within that range.. (not that I have ever counted)

jubilee10 · 26/12/2011 17:19

less than 10 each and I think that's too many. Could you ask family to put money in there bank account.

jubilee10 · 26/12/2011 17:20

Their bank account obviously.

valiumredhead · 26/12/2011 17:28

I agree with Lougle

FrankiDon182 · 26/12/2011 18:33

I am not sure what 'normal' is but my LO received around 50 gifts just from me and DH this year. Both our family also go nuts fir him but, i suggested that relatives tried to purchasings pjs/books/craft bits that are less expensive, useful and less space consuming!

I wouldnt consider this post as boasting.. When you save up all year to give your children a wonderful christmas (excessive maybe i grant) but, why not spoil them? Children are what its all about!!!
