To think this is elf'n'safety gone mad?

met my friend in a cafe for a quick catch up.

They happily served us with two mugs of steaming coffee but point blank refused to give us a cup of hot water to heat a bottle for friends baby!

Is this not madness!?

Because obviously there is no chance of you splashing tea/coffee around Smegma. I hear you OP. Had this issue with DS1. The difference is you pay for coffee, not the hot water. So they over look the dangers of hot drinks in exchange for your cash!

SmegmaNotJustForChristmas · 25/12/2011 19:31

Not the same likelyhood of splash in a small cup as in a large jug that you're dropping a milk bottle in or a glass food jar. That's obvious as well isn't it handdived? I don't drop heavy items in to my coffee.

If you go in to a coffee expect hot coffee and the shop accepts some liability that accidents might happen why should they accept any liability of a baby getting burned because PFB needs his food warmed. Because, you know, they don't

yes but the jug doesnt need to be full! you only need an inch or so of hot water andthen wehn you put the bottle in it displaces the water up and around the bottle, it really shouldnt be an issue tbh and most places are logical ie waitrose, or m&s dont seem to have a problem, ditto john lewis and sainsbury all places i have used int he last 6mths no issue.

AMITHAT Xmas Grin None taken as they say!

I laughed because it was just my thoughts, one of my many bugbears is non-researched based policies, which as you say is blamed on the H&S when it's often lazy policy making.

But enough seriousness on Christmas Day-hope you're all having a good one!

I thought that you wasn't supposed to heat up bottles and perhaps it is bdecause it goes against guidelines and there is a risk of food poisoning?

4madboys · 25/12/2011 21:02

no you can heat up bottles as long as when it was first made it was made with 70 deg water, then chilled and kept cool in a fridge or chiller bag type thing and used within a few hours ( i think you can keep them longer in the fridge) they say making it fresh is best BUT you can make it in advance as long as you follow guildliens and like a cafe would have a fucking clue what the guildlines re making up formula were (or it could be heating up bottled bmilk anyway?) i have foudn that most cafe and supermarkets, department stores have always been fine anyway.

I loked into this bottles crap when I had my nursery as the mums were starting to bring in the makings for feeds instead of ready made under advice from the HV.

It was a right pain as if a babe needs a feed NOW then even a few mins extra as we all know is a PITA.

There was NO evidence that making bottles up in advance was a health risk. Some guru somewhere had said that IF some stupid mother had bottles left over from the day before & IF the bottle was contaminated and IF the babe was underweight/ vulnerable it MIGHT get food poisoning which IF the babe was small could be dangerous.

Nurseries were exempt from these guidleines as long as the bottles were freshly made in the morning as we could be trusted to handle them properly. We decided to stick to ready mades as to my mind there is a greater health risk if multiple bottles were being made up in a hurry.

I really really really hate it when this sort of advice is dished out with no research to back it up. Angry

Rudolfsgottarednose · 26/12/2011 18:52

I wouldn't know about bottles as i BF until mine drank out of cups. I am just going off what is considered 'best practice' which i have to in my work. I have had many an arguement with the HV's about co-sleeping, though (which i did), .

This is "elf'n'safety" as considered by the Court of Appeal this month.
