Fast food

Jaytee666 · 23/12/2011 23:06

I wake up before dawn and make our daughter some mash potatoes. I come back home from work after 12 hours and she's eating KFC (pause: she's one and the mash is still untouched in the fridge).
Partner had the day off and the balls to say 'sorry i was too busy to cook. Also I did not notice food in the fridge'.
The real problem here is I don't seem to be able to express my concerns about the harms of fast food to a baby.
What should I do If I'm not considered as a trustworthy source of information?

An age of "1" isn't an indication - is she just 1 or nearly 2?

At just one, it seems a very silly thing to do. My DS wouldn't have been able to properly chew that sort of chicken at that age. Never mind the fact I refused to feed him any sort of rubbish then.

However, as he got closer to 2 I relaxed a bit more and now at 2.1 I'd not protest a strip of their (boneless)chicken as a one-off and he has also had chicken nuggets from Mcdonalds when we've been out recently - something I'd have not even considered when he'd just turned 1. At nearly 2 though I calmed down and didn't get as hysterical over it. He also now has an occasional biscuit and has eaten some chocolate this year coming up to Christmas. His meals are well balanced in between so t's hardly likely to harm him.

Depending on how close to 1 or 2 she is, would depend on whether or not I think YABU.

Regardless of this, you do need to ensure he doesn't make a habit of it! Feeding that weekly or even monthly can't be so good at any age.

rootietootie · 24/12/2011 20:41

tbf, he is the child's father, and he obviously does not see (occasional) fast food to be a problem. I doubt he would give his own daughter any food that would posed an immediate danger (like choking or such). I don't see the problem. If he did this everyday I might.

debka · 24/12/2011 20:47

My 10 mo ate marshmallows, pringles, olives and stilton for her tea tonight. KFC would have been a positively healthy alternative! Xmas Grin

squeakytoy · 24/12/2011 20:50

A small amount of fried chicken on a rare occasion is not going to turn her into an unhealthy child.

BertieBotts · 24/12/2011 20:52

I think 1 is young enough that people mean 12-17 months when they say "1".

NeuromanticisedVisionsofXmas · 24/12/2011 20:52

of for fucks sake, its chicken, not crack cocaine. PFB much?

startail · 24/12/2011 20:56

PFB!
Take off the skin and check for bones and it's just chicken. Probably still a bit salty for a small child, but hardly a crime.

HeidiKat · 24/12/2011 21:01

Its food not poison, unclench OP. Yes it is not the healthiest food but a bit of fat in the diet of a toddler that is probably on the move all day anyway won't do any damage if it is an occasional treat, it will soon be burned off, it's fast food and lack of exercise combined in older children that I would worry about.

ClaimedByMe · 24/12/2011 21:01

I don't understand, what was dd to have with the mash? It sounds like she was going to have just mash for her tea, either of my children wouldn't have eaten that at that at that age! Why did you get up and make mash early in the morning?

I wouldn't have been too bothered about the KFC tbh!

greensnail · 24/12/2011 21:02

My girls both had very occasional kfc when they were 1 (possibly even earlier than 1). They generally eat very healthily, the odd bit of junk food won't do any harm.

squeakytoy · 24/12/2011 21:04

Probably more nutrition in a piece of KFC than a bowl of bland mashed potato too. :)

BlissfulMistletoe · 24/12/2011 21:05

God it is a KFC

squeakytoy · 24/12/2011 21:06

I am also loving Fabbys words of wisdom, as she has happily admitted on many threads that her own kids have never eaten ANY vegetables Grin

Sirzy · 24/12/2011 21:10

I agree with tigerlily

Ds is just 2 and he had KFC tonight (popcorn chicken) after a tea time disaster. It is the 2nd or 3rd time he has had one, the rest of the time he eats 'proper' food without any problems at all. The odd KFC isn't going to suddenly turn him into an obese toddler overnight!

NinkyNonker · 24/12/2011 21:21

I can't see why anyone would think it a good idea to give crap like this to a baby tbh, yanbu.

NeuromanticisedVisionsofXmas · 24/12/2011 21:23

its fucking chicken! What the fuck is wrong with you people?

Crosshair · 24/12/2011 21:33

KFC is manky, wouldn't feed it to my dog. Next time tell him to get down to greggs and buy her a sausage roll and doughnut!

skybluepearl · 24/12/2011 21:41

KFC is crap, I wouldn't feed it to my cat. I bet the problem is that he fancied eating the stuff! Can you get hold of some healthy eating info for him - HV should have some at least. Can you leave a note and then all the food ready to cook in fridge. What a lay about!

FredFredGeorge · 24/12/2011 22:04

Crispy strips are pretty healthy chicken - the coating is saltier - remove the coating and you've got a great meal for a baby, I'd not think twice at giving my 6mo old chicken from KFC, it has no more saturated fat than a normal chicken breast, and again with the coating removed has no more unsaturated fat, it has a small amount of unsaturated fat more with the coating (although of course babies need calories and the non trans-fat vegetable oil is not very bad at all)

If the choice was potato, or kfc chicken, then the chicken could've been the better option (the original chicken breast meat will be similar again with the coating removed) but no single item can ever make a diet bad.

malakadoush · 24/12/2011 22:32

The salt content in KFC is way way too high for a 1year old - it will put her kidneys under stress as they can't cope with that much salt.

thepeoplesprincess · 24/12/2011 22:37

NinkyNonker Noone is saying it's a good idea to give KFC to a baby, but equally a parent giving a take-away to their own child is very far removed from child neglect or that someone is wholly incapable of looking after their own child unsupervised- which is what other posters on this thread have suggested.

It is possible to take a moderate view.

FredFredGeorge · 24/12/2011 22:41

A full adult serving of 3 crispy strips would be a very high proportion, but not over the limit RDA for salt for a 1-2 year old. A childs portion size would not be near the limit - even if they ate all the coating. Eating just the chicken and not the coating and it would barely be saltier than a regular unseasoned chicken breast.

NinkyNonker · 25/12/2011 08:37

Of course it isn't neglect, no food at all would be neglect, but with food in the fridge and a whole world of other options (he obviously left the house) why chose fast food? Just strikes me as an odd choice when better ones were easily available.

If we were out and the only option was KFC then that is one thing, choosing to give it to a one yr old over other options is unusual in my book.
