to think sending a "happy frickin christmas" card to an elderly couple is a bit strange

They are christian, but they always send Happy Hannukah cards to their Jewish friends, who this year have sent the 'questionable' card. Neither I or they can work out if it is meant to be trendy or insulting?! Can't say I've ever seen a christmas card with frickin on before, and personally wouldn't buy or send it - but I would love to know if I'm missing something! Go on please enlighten me .....

Maybe as they are Jewish and don't celebrate Christmas, they don't know what's the done thing?

If their friends are elderly too then it's likely they may not know what "frickin" means.

I'd say it's in poor taste whoever they're sending it to. But you know them, you're best placed to guess whether or not it was an error of judgement or a snidey thing/hilarious joke.

it is intended to be a joky card.
