to ask how short a fancy dress outfit I can get away with

now that I'm in my mid forties? I'm a size 10 with good legs (but not much in the way of boobs Xmas Grin) and am going with dh to a fairy tale characters party on boxing day. We are going to buy outfits tomorrow - I don't want to look mumsy but the short ones (eg here www.legavenue.co.uk/fairy-tales-c-1013.aspx ) look very - well short Xmas Blush. So can I wear one (with tights)? Is it appropriate? Have not been to a party for so long that I'm compltely out of touch with what goes and what doesn't. The people at the party will be all ages from mid twenties to mid sixties with most in their thirties.

Oooooo, show your legs and be proud of your size 10ness!!

Wear tights so you're covered up and have a fabulous time!!

Xmas Grin
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/12/2011 17:52

Ugh no - don't buy one of those outfits. They look cheap and slutty even on 21 year olds. Homemade costumes far, far better.

Thankgodforcaffeine · 23/12/2011 17:53

they are very short indeed... Xmas Grin

with it being fancy dress I don't think there are any rules about what is appropriate and what isn't (as long as you are wearing something, that is Xmas Wink).

It just boils down to: would you feel comfortable wearing an outfit like this? No point wearing one if all you do is pull down on the hem all night. However if you do feel comfortable then it will show and you will look fabulous!

soggy14 · 23/12/2011 17:54

I don't feel a need to wear something short - just fancied showing off my legs which have been encased in thermal long johns since October Xmas Grin. On holiday in the summer I tend to go very short but go for pretty close to the knee at home so am wondering if a party is more a holiday type event or a school run type thing IYSWIM. Also there don't seem to be many costumes which are not short - I sort of thought that I'd get one of these and buy a slightly longer slip (the company sell them) to wear under it.

I wouldn't OP. Those are lovely fancy dress outfits but if some of the younger girls come along in similar you might feel a bit cringy.

You sound like you have a great figure but I really think those things are for people in their 20's/30's...

sadly I'm not that good with a needle (and no way will have time)

Hmm....my figure sounds same as you and will be 40 imminently - but I don't think I'd wear those. They are nice outfits, but I think the shortness would be too much for me. But all depends on how comfortable and confident you are really - I think feeling like you look brilliant rubs off on how you look.

I'd probably go more for something slinky, fitted black and floor length - and be a wicked witch. And just accessorise with suitable stuff to be more over the top than just wearing a nice fancy dress. Tiara (unless you want witches hat....not very sexy), vampy OTT make-up, etc. ??

Rudolfsgottarednose · 23/12/2011 18:01

You wouldn't wear a bikini to a 'normal' party but would to a beach party, so when it comes to fancy dress, you can go a bit different.

Have you looked at couple costumes? You could theme yourselves.

Indulge a fantasy, wear what you like and feel comfortable, it will give the misery's to scared to try something new, something to bitch about (and that way they will be leaving someone else alone).

MistletoeAndFlump · 23/12/2011 18:03

IMO (and if you have the legs for it) skirts can be as short as short can be, as long as accompanied by thick tights or leggings.

Or maybe I'm just a slut (with good legs) Xmas Grin

DeWe · 23/12/2011 18:07

If you're wearing a 60s costume you can probably get away with not quite showing your pants. Grin

WorraLiberty · 23/12/2011 18:08

Looking at that site though OP....

There are only 3 retail stores that stock these...all the others are online.

Are you sure your local store will be open?

Boxing day is cutting it a bit fine.

PattySimcox · 23/12/2011 18:10

Fancy dress = lots more scope to get away with wearing stuff you wouldn't normally.

bugsonbuns · 23/12/2011 18:13

www.abfab.co.uk/fancy-dress/naughty-biting-hood.aspx red riding hood and bad wolf for you and your DH?

soggy14 · 23/12/2011 18:13

yes - one is near us and I've rung and checked they have lots in stock

whackamole · 23/12/2011 18:13

I was going to say the same as Worra - you've left it very late!

Personally, I wouldn't wear any of those and I am 29.

BUT...I have legs like tree trunks so that might have something to do with it Xmas Grin

bugsonbuns · 23/12/2011 18:16

www.abfab.co.uk/fancy-dress/butterfly-fairy.aspx short and long bits so not so tricky to wear?

bugsonbuns · 23/12/2011 18:21

www.legavenue.co.uk/sexy-cat-p-2671.aspx you and DH could go as Dick Whittington and his cat!
