It's just a personal thing, no comment on what anyone else chooses to do. I just happen to think the Disney message about what it is to be female is lamentable.

I tend to think that the longer I can keep these messages away from her then maybe she'll have time to grow some self esteem that isn't tarnished with ideals of blonde perfection and being saved by a prince!
I expect to be given a hard time of course, but wonder whether there' anyone else out there who is trying to hold out for a bit against the evils of Disney shlock!
Xmas Grin
I do acknowledge that later Disneys have got better with their female role modelling.
Also my mother hated Disney so I have a strong inherited dislike of some of the more dodgy ones. I like the good ones like the jungle book etc.

Yes I see your point but she doesnt see them as they are backround characters she wants to be Captain America as he is the lead. There are some female heros in Avengers Wasp is a female super hero as is Black Widow but she prefers to be Hulk or Iron Man or Captain America, she doesn't see it that way but if it occurs to her I shall tell her she can be just as strong as any man if that is what she wants she can do the rescuing not be rescued.

But I am glad you brought it up thank you as I will watch for that nowSmile

MillyR · 23/12/2011 13:45

Yeah, you see I'd rather my DD saw female characters as portrayed badly in a Disney film than for my DD to grow up not noticing female characters at all. It is better to be flawed than invisible.

She likes Wasp(Avengers cartoons) and Blackwidow (Iron man film, Avengers cartoon) just prefers the others just as DS has his faverites one of which is Wasp. Also the leading lady in Captain America film is pretty strong she is a Agent in the Army and knocks over a trainee who tries to treat her dsrespectfully and is not rescued once but trains Captain America and is certainly not treated as less because of her sex. There are worse role models. DD just happens to prefer the ones I named.

MudAndGlitter · 23/12/2011 13:55

I like She-Ra from he-man. DSD wants to be supergirl or a dinosaur superhero and she watches tonnes of Disney princess films and has the dolls.

Crawling · 23/12/2011 14:00

Also the transformer cartoons that she also likes are quite even, she likes X men and prefers Storm so to her it is about which power she likes not gender.

I hate Storm. She annoys the hell out of me and I'm not sure why.

Living happily ever after... oh what a horrible message to send your child.

I think it depends on the parenting that goes alongside what dc watch. If dh does housework dc will take that message far more than a Disney film!

startail · 23/12/2011 14:20

Surely the younger our DDs have Disney and Barbie the sooner they decide they are babyish and we can carboot all things pinkGrin

I LOVE Disney. Xmas Blush
I've kept all my old classic VHS Disneys and bought newer ones on DVD.
I have 2 DDs aged 7 and 5. My eldest is a tomboy. Doesn't like dolls or dresses. My youngest is princess- mad and very very girly.

Neither of them like Disney films at all. Xmas Sad
