To be fucked off with friends asking why I haven't 'broken up' from work?!

Went out for drinks with friends last night , friends acted utterly aghast that I'm still at work and react with comments like 'Oh poor you, I can't BELIEVE you are still at work!' complete with sad faces.

My non-working best friend has asked me about three times when I'm 'breaking up' from work and keeps phoning me during the day - and was amazed that 'the Friday before Christmas is a working day'!

WTF? It's a normal working week! Why the sympathy? I don't resent it and love my job.

It's like there is no understanding that most companies still have deadlines and that most people don't have enough holiday to just chuck in an extra week before Christmas.

Anyone else have this??

I'm at work now, and will be here until 1800.

It's pretty quiet though (unusual for a Friday afternoon) and in between appointments we're drinking tea and stuffing our faces with biscuits and chocs given us by grateful patients!

It's quieter here than at home anyway Grin

Yes, another still working, albeit slowing down now.

Just emailed a drawing to a builder (cc to the client to show what a good girl I am) Xmas Grin

And as I work from home DD, has not been neglected either. :)

notveryinventive · 23/12/2011 15:59

My MIL does this. I always thought it sounded silly to an adult worker "When are you breaking up for Christmas?" I always thought it was only schools that 'broke up' for holidays Hmm. Am I wrong there?

I too like working this time of year as Im either in an office when its such a relaxed atmosphere or Im in a shop (I dont have 2 jobs, just have done both in the past) where its fun manic.

@Whatmeworry

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 23/12/2011 16:39

Another nurse working nights over christmas here.

I don't care really, comes with the job. It's other people's reactions that irritate though. The look of surprise, even family who know what I do are questioning why I have to work as I worked last yearHmm

brighthair · 23/12/2011 16:43

Doyouthink - yeah that look. And the oh well you must get paid a lot for it. And the oh you're not working new year and Christmas are you?!

I know what you mean doyouthink - DG is military, he is home for christmas as he is drafted locally at the moment but is still duty for New Year's weekend. Friends and family express surprise that he has to go into work over his leave period but someone's got to cover!

Sidge · 23/12/2011 16:44

DG??? I mean DH!! (Have slippery fingers from eating sausage rolls Xmas Grin)

LineRunnerCrouchingReindeer · 23/12/2011 16:46

I am home!! I 'broke up' at 3pm, too.

On the way home I saw some festive Tesco shoplifting arrests, and realised I now have tonight and tomorrow to do 'it all'.

LineRunnerCrouchingReindeer · 23/12/2011 16:47

To do the shopping, not shoplifting ......... Xmas Grin

I teach at a college and the number of people who assume I get the same holidays as the students astounds me. It was a normal week for staff until 5pm today. We had the option of taking time off because the students are off, and I had today and yesterday off, but those who choose to save their days off for another time go in as usual. It's the same every college holiday. If you have no leave left or choose not to use it then you're in.

JollyJinglyJoo · 24/12/2011 01:00

I'm working tomorrow morning until 12, and then I have a blissful 3 days off (the longest holiday I have had all year, so i am really looking forward to it Xmas Grin)

DH, otoh, "broke up" last thurs, and will be off until 9th January. Which is almost like a holiday for me, as he will have the kids/ dog. bliss

lisaro · 24/12/2011 01:03

I'm working on Christmas day. Normal shift day for me.

StealthPolarBear · 24/12/2011 01:05

I used to love working as a waitress on christmas day. PLace was so festive, everyone was in a happy mood. People lingered over their food. Boss paid extra, was extremely grateful and told us to leave all non-essential clearing up and cleaning until boxing day when he and his girlfriend would come in and do it all themselves!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 24/12/2011 07:37

I hope everyone working Christmas and New Year manages to get some relaxing time with their families.....ditto for those with dh's workingXmas Smile

Proudnscary · 24/12/2011 08:04

Me too Doyouthinktheysaurus - I wish everyone who is working tomorrow in pubs and hospitals and restaurants etc etc a very happy Christmas. I hope you manage to have some fun tomorrow and that you have some great days off whenever they are!

This thread actually started with me feeling really irritated and now it feels like a solidarity thread for those working the festive period Xmas Smile
