Neighbours driving me round the bend

mumtorobbie · 22/12/2011 15:32

Last night, my neighbours were running up and down the stairs and banging doors until 2am, which resulted in me getting four hours sleep and woke my DS up twice (I'm also six months pregnant, which isn't helping matters).

My neighbour is renting the house out to her friend and nine year old daughter who doesn?t seem to go to bed until midnight at the earliest. The daughter is very heavy footed (her mum?s words, not mine) and she thunders up and down the stairs at least half a dozen times a night and wakes up my son whose bedroom runs alongside their stairs.

I have complained to her once before when we spent an entire evening being subjected to various doors being slammed.

Problem is, the previous neighbour was as quiet as a mouse and we never heard her so the noise coming from next door is a bit of a shock but I don?t know whether this is normal noise and I?m being unreasonable getting in a tizz about it.

My DH says I should leave it but I?m of the firm opinion that if nobody says anything to her she won?t realise it?s a problem and it will continue night after night. Just don?t know what to do for the best really.

Is it just the one night they have woken you up? Next door also seem to have elephant kids and tbh I have tuned it out As I think in normal hours (ie 7-10) its part of semi detached living. However if it is happening night after night outside that time say something.

However annoying though it is I don't think it really constitutes noise pollution in same way loud music etc does.

And am probably with dh- not sure your neighbour will stop dd running at that age. Can you move ds bed further away?

mumtorobbie · 22/12/2011 15:41

Well it was particularly bad last night. Some nights I don't hear a thing except for a bit of white noise from their TV.

I don't think it's a deliberate thing on her part but I'm really sensitive to noise and I just feel 2am is a bit late to be banging about.

Honestly, she's so noisy running up the stairs, our pictures shake!

Grin she must be some nine year old to do that. Maybe use that as an angle as much as noise- ie the shaking is damaging stuff in house.

Erm, well she is a bit on the large side. God, that sounds awful but she is quite big.

Grin you are making me giggle now

Buy some foam earplugs. You can get them from any high street chemist, they're quite comfy to sleep in, and you can't hear a damn thing. Bliss.

mumtorobbie · 22/12/2011 16:05

Yeah, earplugs might be the way to go. I really don't want to fall out with them and I'm sure the noise my three year old makes in the morning is pretty loud at times so we're not perfect by any means.

Glad I read all these replies before storming round there tonight asking if her daughter can refrain from thundering up the stairs and causing our plaster to crack from the vibrations!

This is exactly the same problem I have. I had great neighbours for years - with no problems, 2 kids - and then they moved. Next to move in was a teenage family with one child. This seemed to be green light for what seemed to be all the neds in the area to congregate next door a9normally till 5 o'clock in the morning). Solution is to complain, complain, complain. My neighbours are on a final warning from their housing association and the improvement in their behaviour is astonishing. Thank God.
