WIBU to report these patches of blood?!

On the way back from taking the kids to school today I came across 2 big patches of blood - biggest 1 about the size of an adult head, smaller one about the size of a kids head. They were still wet so looked reasonably fresh. I stood there looking around like a lemon but couldn't see anyone injured and couldn't see any trail of blood to follow. I knocked on my neighbours door to see if he was ok or knew anything but there was no answer (will check again later to make sure it wasn't him that had been injured). There's a lot of blood there and it felt wrong to just walk on and do nothing so I rang the non-emergency police number. Was that an over reaction? I rang a couple of hours ago and haven't heard or seen the police yet - which is fine, I'm not really expecting them to get back to me just to investigate it.

I'm just worrying and wondering whether I'm potentially wasting police time...

You might well potentially be wasting police time, but that 's for them to judge and you clearly had the best intentions so don't sweat. There's also the very small possibility that you may well help in an investigate into a serious crime.

YANBU

Potentially someone could be hurt, and you may have at least gone some way to helping them. Do try your neighbour again though.

Winkly · 22/12/2011 11:24

Don't worry. Ringing 999 would have been an over reaction, a call to the non-emergency number is fine. It probably is nothing, but there's always the chance it was something iykwim.

I think you did the right thing.

Seeing random huge patches of blood like that would freak me out.

LingDiLong · 22/12/2011 11:31

It did indeed freak me out, usually I'm trying to avoid wheeling my pram through dog poo not a massive patch of blood.

I'm glad the consensus so far is IANBU. Feel a bit better about it now. I will definitely keep checking on the neighbour, although he has a daughter who lives away and I think he might have gone there for Christmas.

You definitely did the right thing. What a disturbing sight!

Bloodymary · 22/12/2011 11:32

YANBU I would have done the same, it would certainly have freaked me out as well.

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 22/12/2011 12:39

You did the right thing. Someone's dog or cat might have been run over and be injured somewhere nearby - if the police know there's "something up" they can go and investigate it. Blood doesn't just appear on the floor for no reason, so something is going on...

CheeseandPickledOnion · 22/12/2011 13:00

I would have done the same thing.

JUst a quick update. Got a knock on the door a few hours after reporting this, policewoman saying she'd found some blood and had I seen anything, she knew nothing about me reporting it. She'd found some more blood further down the road! Apparently there was a big fight outside the pub where even more blood was found. Nothing has been reported though so she asked for a bucket and washed it away. Hope it doesn't turn out to be important evidence of some awful crime...

how bizzare, though I would suspect someone has a broken nose.
